This was a beautiful poem; I've been that commuter, taking the Path train from Newark, NJ into "The City," then wandering around silent streets (very early in the morning), awed by the spectacle that only NY has to offer. I used to do document review on weekends for legal cases when I was still in law school (I had a full time job during the week-- I was a night student). Sooooo many people! So many dreams. Oh, to be young again! Kind regards, Ann Marie

Thanks for the excellent review and for your comments and perspective on the poem. I'm glad the poem resonated for you and that it reminded you of those special moments when you were in the city, perhaps carried away by your own daydreams, off into the magic of those little corners with all those people we never seem to meet. estory

Yeah, estory. those were the distant days of commuting, For me it's a distant day. I haven't done it for so many years that I've all but forgotten it. But you brought it back in your wonderful poem. That faraway look in every commuter's face having their own specific dream. I liked it. All the best. Ulla:))

A very well-written poem about the commuters on the train daily to their workplace and home. Many faces we see every day, some become familiar over the years, but we seldom speak to each other, every one has their own dreams keeping them company.

Thanks for the excellent review and for your comments and perspective on the poem. I'm glad it captured for you those moments when we look into all those faces of strangers and wonder who they are, what they are like, where they come from, where they are going to. This magic of life. estory

I wish I could daydream like that while standing on the railroad platforms. Perhaps the fact that I stand on New York City subway platforms, seeing homeless people and hungry rats, takes that ability away from me, but I'd definitely like to live vicariously through your daydreams. I love the picture you paint of NYC (my home town), and you make me long for Christmas and the holiday lights and animated store windows. Thank you for presenting such a clear and uplifting picture through your poetry.

Thanks for the excellent review and for your comments and perspective on the poem. I'm glad it caught for you maybe some of the more uplifting moments of dreaming about the city. Maybe I was around Rockefeller more than you. It's a big city with dark parts too. My poem New York City brings some of that together, maybe R Train too. but in this one, I wanted to create a more uplifting mood. estory

I love New York, warts and all. I've also written about its darker side in a couple of poems I've submitted (unsuccessfully!) to magazines and not FanStory that touch on the darkside but, also, deal with the many good people hidden by the city's often negative reputation. It felt good to read your poem, since it didn't stereotype New York as just "that city where you have to watch your purse."

You definitely put across more than just the essence of this poem, estory.

Although it is NY, the vivid imagery made the reader conjure up any major world city with the same or similar architecture, that bustle of urgency peculiar to large cities, including the mental trip "into the little corners and into the lives of the individuals in the crowds behind the faces you see" on the underground trains, trams, buses and along the streets.

You're also right on cue with those "possibilities" in the end with the skaters and bladers.

This is vivid and, to me, the non-poet, brilliant!

Thanks again for the amazing six star review and for your wonderful comments supporting this poem. It's always great when a piece can resonate like this for someone; especially for someone who doesn't really read poetry all the time. I hope it piques your interest! estory

This is a lovely poem, uplifting in spirit. So many of us go through the daily boring routines of our lives without noticing all of the wonderful and interesting things around us. Your poem captures those moments perfectly. It reminds us that life is good..just open your eyes and look. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for your perspective on the poem and all the support. If we let our imagination go, it can take us into all these little places, meeting all these overlooked people. We just have to dream ourselves off from the launching pad....estory

you have echoed a line of thought that i often indulge in.Every time I am at a station or at a bus stop, I look around to see the other commuters.
sometimes their faces show all kinds of expressions ,though some manage to keep inscrutable mask.
i enjoyed this .Thank you very much for sharing.

I just love the unlimited possibilities of this.
Much like our dreams.
If I lived in New York, this would be me daily, dreaming, and pondering the dreams of others.
Love the 'gargoyles'...love the skaters, etching their dreams into ice.
Beautiful!!!!
Blessings...

I think there is a typo in the last couple of words of your author's note. Given that typo I have to ask whethert that should read 'a poem of hopeless story', or perhaps 'a poem of hope's story'. I am inclined to the more optimistic view. The idea os t skaters skatinting into their own pirouettes is quite attractive.

This had that suburban quality that was the trademark of so much of John Betjeman's poetry except that he would have put more flesh on the characters. I found the poe,m most enjoyable.

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for your interesting comments and perspective. This is a poem of letting one's daydreams take flight, even in the middle of the crowd, in the city, and letting it take you into all these little corners and intersections with all kinds of people we wouldn't normally meet. An uplifting poem of spirit and hope estory
