I love this - in particular the last line, which actually goes against the conventional wisdom that the afterlife is the aim. 'Substandard lodgings' is an inspired word choice. Great stuff.

I like this Tanka because it is such a different take on Halloween -- it makes ghosts, human -- except that it does not because their one-night luxury is simply not our cup of tea. =) Loved the contrast, just the same.

I have not dug deep into Tanka science, but according to the rules you provided(thank goodness) in your notes, you are on the right track. The local kids in the old days had no store-bought costumes, but trick or treating was free.

It seemed more fun when we made our own costumes. My sons did, too. Now, they're as expensive as buying real clothes. Thank you for reviewing and support.

This reminds us of the ghosts surrounding us on this night. They become free from the bounds of the things/people they haunt, supposedly, and trick or treat with us.
