The interaction between these two is excellently handled, and the dialogue also takes in the elements that otherwise might have been told rather than shown. I felt sorry that their dalliance deprived them of their breakfast as I am a breakfast lover...

I think I might have got that somewhat mixed up. I meant a lover of, rather than at, breakfast.

As Charles and Helen's relationship goes beyond just friendship, he struggles a bit with his conservative moral upbringing. I think she might be rescuing him from a cold, disapproving little life. "I closed the curtains against the prying eyes of the Sun God, and pushed to the back of my mind the creeping suspicion that Aphrodite was also the patron goddess of prostitutes. I was in little doubt there would be a price to pay for my weakness."

"Yes, it was idyllic. The Kalash Valley is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Bees hum among the wild roses, the mountain air is heavy with the scent of flowers, and snow-capped peaks reach up to touch the sky. Apricot trees bend under the weight of their golden fruit and, sometimes, if you are quiet, you can hear the mellow piping of the golden oriole, poised like a streak of fire among the branches." So beautifully descriptive, Tony. You make me want to visit it, although it's likely part of the fairy tale.

We stood together in silence as the sun's first rays spilled over the horizon and watched the morning star GREW fainter and fainter until it finally disappeared. watched it GROW. Or, we watched AS the morning star grew...,

Good story, with a good plot line and interesting characters. You have me hooked. Well done, Tony.

Thanks for your review, Adrienne. I'm glad that you are picking up on elements of Charles's character, such as his conservative upbringing, and that you are enjoying the descriptive passages. Thanks for the SPAG catch. There always seems to be at least one of them, no matter how many times I read through before pressing the 'Post' button! All the best, Tony

It sounds very much to me that Charles Brandon is in love, so he's been seduced into not caring about much else it see,s to me Tony. But I'm sure they'll have to have their feet on the ground. I'm sure that Charles has learnt a great deal more abou Helen, well done Tony, blessings, Roy

There is an air of seduction in this episode; In the landscape picture you paint, with the flowers and fairies and the serenity of the mountains; the peacefulness, and in the undertones of Venus and Aphrodite, personified by Helen. Its clear Charles is being swept off his feet. To where? That is the question. Looming in the background is this question of the mysterious Estelle Gaudin. There seems to be a big chasm between these two stories; i'm curious to see how you're going to stitch these things together. estory

Many thanks for your review, estory. I think I may need to use a darning needle to tie all the threads of this together! All the best, Tony

Hi there,

Another lovely piece of writing here. the words flow so well and it's easy to see how Charles could get swept up and away with it all.

very nice
