I really liked this. 'Tis a full time job.
What I didn;t like?
My husband was up around 4 a.m. to start the fire before he left for work. I kept it going all throughout the day; loading the wood and stoking the fire to keep the house warm and toasty.
So what's so bad about that? I do it every day after about sept 15th and did it when I was a kid too. Yeah, I have a furnace and electrics and all that but no way do I want to pay when there's a woodlot nearby. A woodstove is WARM and an asset.
Anyway, I liked the idea of children being a full-time career and a nightshift to boot. Been there, done that and couldn't agree more. I just liked the way you served it up. Worthy of a fiver!

I appreciate your excellent review. Thank you so much! Your name says it all. For me, having a stove to stoke every day was a real challenge. I was a southern girl in every way and pink powderpuff at that. It was boot camp for me. But, I made it and got baptized into rough northern life at the same time. I wouldn?t trade those years for anything. Sally :+)

What a great response to this writing prompt and contest. The late-night workaholic. Your pregnancy stories are intense. I loved that you laced humor into the story with your friend "Tums."

Hello. I wasn't aware this was a contest entry till I got to the very end.
You wrote a great story keeping me in suspense trying to figure out your new career (I don't want to say what I thought).
Then I realized you were referring to being a mom. Great career choice!
I'm s father to three and a grandpa to five (they call me Poppa)!
Nicely done, John

A unique approach to the meaning of night shift. Your chosen career? That of a mother. I enjoyed your descriptions of the late stage of pregnancy. I remember those days. I too have to be induced--for my second child.
No man would be brave enough to go through this more than once. LOL

I was all prepared to think that you were getting a job as a nurse in the hospital or something like that, LOL. And then to find out it wasn't as menial of a job is that, but a full-time mom job, which is the most important job in the world. This was a great story I truly enjoyed reading it, good luck in the contest :-)

You had me fooled with your beginning! Well, nobody can say having babies is not night shift work. From labor to feedings, the most action always seems to be at night. Interesting that things always happened for you at 1:00. I guess that means you are number one!

This is such a heartwarming piece written in response to the contest prompt. The title is perfect. I love your career choice... very early on in the story I was trying to figure it out. lol. I guess I'm a little slow. Your prose is smooth. reads easy. your description of the coming of baby #1 is great. You talk about this, your career, throughout your life. Very well done!
