Hello Sandra,
This is an excellent beginning to your new story.
I think many would be shocked at the treatment of women, children
and anyone not in the "upper class".
Women couldn't even own property.
You've captured the reality of life a hundred years ago.

I'm not sure if it just a difference in countries, but in the US
college students are usually 18 to 22 years old.
You have Tommy as fifteen?

Excellent link: Mary is to Gladys what Mildred was to Mrs Humphries.
Well done (but I hope it will be a bit more Uplifting in future chapters)
Robert

Hi Robert, thank you so much for the six stars and fabulous review. I have to age Tommy probably by a couple of years;16/17. In the UK, you go to College at 16, and on to university at 18/19... but I need Tommy to be older for the part he'll be playing very soon. ;)) This book will have a romance, mystery, murder sadness and joy in it. You know, just your ordinary common-or-garden type book. If I were to really go into the suffragette movement properly, it would be a whole book on it's own. I don't want that ... at least, not in this book. I'm really pleased with the fantastic review you gave me, my friend, thank you!! :)) Sandra ..

-An excellent chapter, Sandra, that flows
smoothly from beginning to end.
-Gladys is in a terrible condition because
of her brute of a husband, and Tommy
is angry and protective of his mother,
but realizes what the issues are, too.
-Of course, Ver. and Mildred are going
to lend their support, and be as helpful as possible.
-Mary is a devoted servant to Gladys, and
is willing to assist her in any way she can,
even if the consequences go against her.
-The comparison at the end between her and
Gladys, and Mildred and Mrs. Humphries is
also very good.
-It allows Ver. to think about the brutes
she has come to know in the books
before this, and it adds continuity
to this chapter with the Vice Admiral.
-The ending has smooth transition from
Gladys and Tommy and the suffragette
movement to going back to the future.
-It is a very new experience for Mildred, though.
-That was a good touch to include.
-The question now is where do we go
from here; it should be interesting!

You are very welcome and deserving, Sandra. You did a great job and the chapter flowed seamlessly. I am sure you are cooking up some surprises--what would a story be without them. "Oh, Lordy, I jes' don' know, Miss Sandra."

I'm so sorry(.) I wasn't expecting him home until tomorrow.' - just a suggestion. Two complete sentences/thoughts

Another clean, crisp chapter, Sandra. My mother's married name is Mitchell. Every time I read your name, I do a double take, LOL.

The voice, the dialogue, the descriptors resounding for each character flow freely and with good essence and pace. I found no errors really and found this a refreshingly concise write. I love the idea that these two are partners in crime, twinkling back and forth between the eras. Excellent concept for a write and nice use of historical background. Keep em coming, dear.

Like Veronica, I often question the ugly side of man's nature. Maybe they'll learn that power over something smaller and weaker is not a sign of manliness, but it just might take another millenium for it to sink in. LOL
Excellent chapter. I could really feel Tommy's rage.

Yes, it would be good, but as you said, it won't be for a long time, and by then I'll most definitely be gone! Thank you, Diane, for your lovely review. So pleased you liked it. :)) Sandra x

Those were rough times when men totally controlled women's lives, what they said/where they went/who they knew. You explained this clearly, making the Vice Admiral a horrid bully.

I didn't notice any corrections.

Thank you so much for your lovely review, Ellen, and all those lovely stars as well!! I would have hated living in those days, you can quite understand why the suffragettes were formed. The name was very appropriate too! Big hugs, my friend. :)) Sandra xxx

My grandmother and mother marched for the cause.
Mom wanted to be a lawyer but 'women didn't do that; men only'. She ended up running the family apartments which involved a lot of legal contracts and eventually law suits when the integration agenda of the sixties moved into our neighborhood.
So many brilliant women's talents were wasted in the 20th century. Let's hope our fight continues placing women in professions that they aspire to.

Another well-written chapter that really gets to the heart of the problem of abuse. It is always a power play, and when the perpetrator had such real power as the Vice Admiral, the hopelessness of the situation is complete. Even in these more enlightened times, it seems that is still often the case. Good to see some of the perpetrators being brought to book. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out, with the clash between modern sensibilities and those of a century ago.
Just one small point: "What is [was] it with powerful men back in the old days,"
Your fluent dialogue and accurate characterisation make this, without doubt, a six star chapter.

Researching the abuse part of this story, I was really surprised that the law allowing men to beat their wives wasn't changed until the mid 1970s! That was terrible! At least now there is justice, but only against the few that are caught and only when the wives will give evidence against them. So many are too scared to go that far.Thank you so much for your lovely review, Tony, and for all those stars, that was so kind of you. (I've made the correction, thank you for that!) Sandra xxx

It looks like they were sent back to help Gladys and the Suffragettes. I hope there's a way to help Gladys, but I doubt it... unless they keep her away from the marches and take that on themselves. Good premise for this new/last story. I keep thinking of Mary Poppins. :)

Aw, thank you for the golden stars, Phyllis, and what a lovely review to go with them! I'm sure Mary Poppins would love a part in this, just think what she could do!! Big hugs, dear friend. I hope you are feeling a little better now? Just keep taking care and come back with your usual gusto! :)) Sandra xx

So incredibly well written Sandra. The emotional reactions to the abusive husband dealt with in an appropriate manner for the text, and against the backdrop of the suffragettes it shall be interesting how that bit unfolds.

A great read, at a fine pace and easily to imagine oneself in the scene.

Very enjoyable.

the UK references threw me a little. Still, don't know what a fob is.
Hard to use the phrase-good story when you consider the topic being presented. The sad part is that history tells us it still exists.
In the middle:Mildred stood up and handed the cloth to Mary. "You need t' wipe that cut as clean as you can t' stop any infection." Drop the she told her-it is what most editors would call a double tag.
Position, sex, nobility, or rank doesn't excuse the cowardice of a woman beater.

Hi there, thank you for reading this part of my book, I know what you mean about being difficult to say, 'good story'. To fob someone off, is to answer a question with an excuse, or a lie, anything to try and cover the truth up. Gladys tried to pretend she'd simply fallen and knocked herself out. but the hand print on her told Tommy differently. It's an English expression dating back to the early 18th century and still used today. And you are right, hitting women is the act of a coward. Thank you again for you review! :) Sandra xx

This is a compellling chapter ripe with the characters' feelings and the 'rule of the times'. It's neither comforting to read nor to consider that such behavior on the part of men - be they wealthy or not - toward women at that point in history was condoned or ignored! Wretched for the poor women who suffered spousal abuse.

Gladys is one brave woman for continuing to serve as a suffragette knowing the literal pain and aggravation she will endure from her unsympathetic husband. Her calling for women's vote must be overwhelmingly strong. The time travelers did well not to linger long with Gladys and her son because reprisals from Charles would have been both swift and severe, no doubt.

This segment of the book is well written and conveys the severity of Gladys' injuries and the degree of discomfort her son feels about the situation. The ending leaves the reader wanting more so the next segment will be interesting.

Keep up the good work and congrats on all your successful publications. You deserve feeling proud.

Best to you and all those you cherish.

Hi Jonnie, thank so very much for this lovely review. It took the women a long time to get the vote and a mediocre of women's rights. Their husbands didn't like it because it would undermine their authority. I'm so pleased you enjoyed this part of my latest book, I'd love it if you would join me on this trip. :)) Sandra xx
