Excellent entry with such a somber message. Farming is such a tough way to make a living. It's a 24/7 job. It is such a shame when countries can't or won't help in these crisis situations. Poem reads well both silently and out loud. Hugh

Hi Hugh, Thanks for your comments and I felt a need to voice my sadness at these farmers plights all too often a familiar story. Our Govt give token gesture offers when enough voices are heard. Glad you found my poem worth reading Cheers Christine

I like how this sheds light on an underreported tragedy with six well-chosen words (and rhyme to boot!). No matter how high-tech we get, we still need rain to live.

One nit - I'm thinking you don't need the apostrophe in "suicide's".

Loved the poem - good luck in the contest.

Hi Mark Thanks for you review and have corrected suicides Ta for that. An all too familiar story in Australia many farmers are in tragic circumstances so sad to see them struggling . my small way to bring their plight to readers Cheers Christine

Oh my goodness Christine, how awful that those poor farmers resort to suicide. It is always the farmers (and their families) that seem to suffer the most because of their crops and herds. I do so agree that charity begins at home, similar situations happen here in the USA and Canada and I have forever asked why not take care of those here first, then help the world. Good luck, thanks for sharing.

Christine,

This is tragic -- and in sooo many ways! It reminds me of our stock market crash here in the 30s -- starting the Great Depression for the States.

But, how do these guys get to 'take the easy way out' and leave their wives and children to struggle alone?

I often feel sorry for people who make this choice. My heart seems too hard to in these cases. --sigh--

Thank you for sharing. Much good luck to you in the voting.

I've seen a lot of these, but yours is one of my top two favorites.

Hi Robyn Thanks for a terrific review and glad you like this ? Being a farmers daughter it alway saddens me to hear of the farmers plight here in Australia it is a beautiful country but often so unforgiving and ruthless and many just cant cope leaving tragedy behind. No sure if suicide is the 'easy way out' more a desperate cry for help often unheard and it must be a shit way to leave a family and happens way too often . no easy answer I pray for rain though Cheers Christine

A powerful poem with a poignant message. Makes people think and also remember their own blessings, and that's always a great thing in a poem. Your rhymes are fantastic and the image you chose melds perfectly with the subject matter. Thank you for bringing the plight of the farmers to our attention. The world can be a tough and cruel place and the more honest we are about that, the more help there will be. X

What a sad (but important) topic to be writing about. An Australian myself, I know how terrible the drought is. Thank you for sharing this very expressive six-word poem!

It's such a tragedy, a farmer has to live by faith, they simply can't do without rain. The farmers on our West Coast aren't doing so well either, we've ad some good rains here the last week, with a couple of inches, our main reservoir was at 18% but up to 26% now. Beautifully written Christine, well done, blessings, Roy

The life of many farmers is a difficult one that is for sure, Here in NZ, it is the young male farmer who makes up the largest percentage suicide rates in the entire country, that alone is a rather disturbing fact i reckon. Strong six word poem for the contest!
