Thanks so much, Irish. I was hoping to answer as many questions as possible especially for some of the new folk. Nothing's perfect, but there's a lot to like about it. I'm happy the other entrants had great essays too. A lot of good ideas. Blessings, mike

Your points are both valid and well written. I always read all of the entries in a contest before voting. I think that's the only fair way to do it. Besides fairness, to not read them all is to risk missing out on some really enjoyable reading!
My biggest pet peeve, however, is rude reviews. I try to stick with the old adage, "If you can't say something nice..." If I truly can't find something positive to say about a piece (which is rare), I simply don't say anything. Pretty simple, yes?
Thanks for taking the time to write this. It's obviously well thought out.

I learned a lot reading your piece... And it gave me the courage to enter more poetry contests, because I was scared out of my wits that I'm not good enough, but you made me realize that it's A learning process... i'm not discouraged anymore... Thank you so much :-)

I have often wondered about people having whole groups of people who vote for them automatically, even in blind contests. But, as you say, if everyone voted, that problem wouldn't exist. And you can't expect to win if you don't enter. I loved the self-effacing humor, the warm tone, the friendly advice. I expect this will be another contest you'll win. Hell, I'll vote for you myself. I actually read every word of your essay, I didn't skip over anything and I thank you so much for your enlightening peice. I have been with FS for a year now and there are still things I don't understand. Please can you answer these questions.
1) am I right in thinking, when it comes to rankings it is quantity and not quality that counts?
2) In order to get loads of reviews and "all time best" you must spend a bloody fortune irregardless of how crap your work is?

There's some truth to both of those statements. It is true that quantity is needed to get high up in the rankings. But that alone will only take you so far. Quality still beats quantity when it comes down to it. A post that receives a lot of six-star ratings far our performs a piece that only receives five-star ratings. It takes a heck of a lot of quantity to overcome a qualtity writer who is also writing quantity.
As far as All Time Best, yes, you do need those reviews to be considered, but a large fan base and enthusiasm for your work play a part too. Some of the authors here automatically get reviews as people look forward to their posts. So, they don't necessarily have to promote too highly. But, yes, if you promote ANYTHING high enough, you have a good chance. But then again, if it's received several four star ratings and is truly "crap", Tom won't give it the ATB or so he says.
There's a lot of truth in what you say, but quality does matter and it matters a lot when all things are equal. There are flaws though as I'm sure after a year you are feeling. It gets frustrating and I do understand and feel the same way a LOT of the time. But all we can do is point things out and make the best of it. It really is a great place with great people in spite some flaws. I get mad, but I'd miss it too. :)) mike

You are a good author so, of course, you win a lot. The ones that drive me crazy are the winners who have no business winning, ones that my dachshund could write better, or even my first graders win. You know there are times it happens. I have often wondered who makes up the committee too. Anyway, there are some good entries for this contest, I have read them. Good luck.
