Very enjoyable to read, your poem provokes imagery and your story of your trip to Africa. I can see the culture and nature and the life cycle in progress. I am not quite sure if you enjoyed your trip or not? It's thought provoking and makes you wonder... I have questions. :)

Kathleen... It was an indescribable event... I tried but couldn't even come close to what the true feeling of being there was like... Thanks for the thoughtful review. I think my last couplet sums it up... I loved it. yours, diana

An awesome write, ma'am -- so vivid, so intense yet your very own feelings ebb through here and there (not just at the end). :) :) :) I thoroughly enjoyed your prose from beginning to end!! :) :)

And for the nerd wanderings (if you'll pardon the tangent)....I wonder if there is no gene for color-blindness in the Maasai tribe....as red-green is the most common form and the color 'red' to a color blind male looks 'brown' or even 'colorless'.....that includes all the different hues on that red part of the spectrum...will never forget the time we slowed down on a drive through the woods on vacation to admire a HUMONGOUS azalea bush covered in gorgeous red/magenta/pink flowers (so many it was hard to even find leaves!) and my middle son (who is color blind) looked back and forth between our "ooooing" and "aahhhhing" faces and the bush and very perplexedly exclaimed, "What!? It's just a dead bush!!" :) :)

Thanx for sharing your travels with us -- I look forward to more inspired works! :) ) Yvette

I love this story poem, it was so descriptive I felt as if I were there. Did you really go there..that would be amazing! I think it would be somewhat scary with all the wild animals. Thanks for this interesting story.

Hi, Diana,

This was a beautiful poem, full of information and lovely imagery. Have you gone on a safari? I'm jealous! My husband went on one when his ship stopped in Africa back in the mid-eighties and those pictures are gorgeous.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful musings with us,

~patty~

Hello Diane
So much to capture the imagination, and though you are light with your brush strokes your sketch is very, very descriptive. You are right, it can feel ethereal, but it must also be remembered that it is still there, even now when you read this, still there and still happening and it is neither brutal nor kind, but balanced.
What stuck me when travelling inland was that you pass settlements and cows, then after a while cows mixed with the odd giraffe or zebra, then further on zebra and perhaps wildebeest and ultimately you come up to your first predator - and you can't recall passing through a fence of any kind.
I have spent long periods in the bush but I have yet to see a kill - only the recent remains, so you were very fortunate in that respect - I say 'fortunate', many people would rather not see it, perhaps.
Vermilion is a lovely word and the Masai have a very 'other world' feel about them, well that was my impression.
I thoroughly enjoyed this piece of writing - a quick narrative of an aspect of a gigantic continent of many diverse peoples, terrains and experiences.
Again, this is so enjoyable and it resounds with your enthusiasm.
I wish you well with your continued writing.
cheers
phill

Thanks Phil... I agree the comforting thing to me is that the sun still rises every day on that beautiful land and does so without me in it... I saw one kill... one (the warthog) maimed and the hippo was already dead because cats where 4 deep waiting to fee... paitently I might add... Jalili was a great guide and as you probably know every time we passed another jeep word would spread where the action was. Thanks for your wonderful review. yours, diana

"Africa", is an exceptionally well-written and deftly descriptive piece. This talented poet's work was a pleasure to both read and review. To me, this is a six. You KEEP WRITING and I'll KEEP READING. I look forward to seeing your next post.

Thanks so much for the animal species/genus lesson, Diane.
I did not know you were from Africa originally (based on the quote by Thomas Wolfe you've included in the last line of your poem). It must be beautiful there but hot as hell!
Africa is a place I've always wanted to visit but probably never will.
Good rhythm and rhyme all throughout your Share a Story in a Poem Contest entry.
Beast (oops!) Best of luck to you in the final judging.

Your words and descriptions brought a vivid picture to my mind, but not even this picture can do justice to the scenes you witnessed. I've always wanted to do an African wild life reserve holiday. I can't think of any better holiday. Sadly though, I feel this poem may be the closest I ever make to Africa. And for that I thank you
