I've often been accused of being too emotional and sentimental, but I believe in honest sentiment, and the need to purge ourselves at certain times, which is ancient. Men would live at least five or six more years and not have ulcers if they could cry better.
The only good writing is intuitive writing. It would be a big bore if you knew where it was going ahead of time. It has to be exciting, instantaneous and it has to be a surprise. Then it all comes blurting out and it's beautiful. I've had a sign by my computer for the past 5 years now which reads, 'DON'T THINK...WRITE!'

I can relate to this in a slightly different way. I will go 3 or 4 day periods when I am writing four poems a day and three at the same time. then it stops and I think, thank you now I can do and think about something else..

This is really good and I love how you describe the differences of a day when the words flow effortlessly and abundantly (love when that happens) and when they don't and it seems like a struggle to just get started. (Ugh!) Well done! Awesome artwork too!

How very true these sentiments are for us writers - all inspiration can disappear like it never existed 'all but frozen' - the writer's world is indeed a precarious one !

Too true. Inspiration can vanish so quickly. Thank you, zanya, for sharing my poem.

This made an impact. I know writers block well and you have captured with your words exactly how it feels. I love the way you formatted the poem as well with a good use of imagery. Thanks for sharing.

A very well-written free verse poem. There ia always a possibility that inspiration will dry up at any time. When we feel stressed and under pressure it is harder to find inspiration.

Your point about stress and pressure is well put, Sandra. Writers suffer from these factors like anyone else. Many thanks for your kind praise.

Hello Anon
Very good. It is always a pleasure as a reader to come across a piece that is open and accessible, and not littered with private or obscure references. Poetry is a form of communication after all, and your work here is direct, readable and, as I say, open. You encourage the reader to consider your position, you do not challenge the reader.
The content too is very plain (and I mean this a compliment). Anybody who has tried any form of creative writing will relate to the condition of writer's block - and the analogy of a frozen river is a clever and accurate one.
This is very strong overall and I wish you well in your contest with this piece.
In passing, I read the end as a "dark, still... / pool." rather than "dark...still / pool" but I am sure that is a small point of personal preference.
I wish you well with your future writing
cheers
phill

It pleases me greatly, phill, that you think my poem is ?plain and simple,? not obscure in any way. That is my intent when I write: to reach the common man. Many thanks for your praises.

This is an excellent and solid entry into the Free Verse prompt contest. Your use of visual manipulation supports the theme of the inspiration running out. Very well done.

Very nice depiction of a watery writer's block.
Somehow, I get the impression your block isn't entirely real.
All writers touch on this subject once or twice.
You've touched on it creatively. There is hope.

Peace, Lee
