A very impressive poem. The rhyme and flow worked out well for you. Sorry about your friend. In a way I can understand his decision to go for euthanasia if he was in that much pain. It sounded as if the prognosis had definitely been confirmed. You really make the situation vivid with the dinner conversation going on. I can feel your reaction when he breaks the news of his decision. He sounds like quite the classy guy. judi

Yes, I understand the attraction, the interest, the appreciation and affection you had for Ivan. A close friend, many years ago, decided to call it a day. His close friends never really knew why. But he is still missed and he could never be replaced. Ivan left you with feelings and a rationale for his decision. In that respect you are lucky. Best wishes.

Wow. Ivan sounds like an incredibly brave, humbling and inspiring man and I love the way that you honour him so beautifully in this poem. I'm sure this was a devastating time for you, and probably a difficult poem to write but I'm sure you've found just as I have, that writing about these things can be very cathartic and therapeutic and helps us to process them. I love the format that you chose and I think the quotes that you used e.g 'hey, d'you want an espresso?' really give a voice to both you and Ivan. They make us see you both as just normal people like you and I rather than fanciful characters which helps us to relate to you more and connect with the story. Lovely work and a great way to honour an important friend. Hayley x

Powerful poem, Diana. I thought you told the story well and made a fitting tribute. Going out on our own terms, isn't that what we all want? I'm not sure how much feedback you want since this is such a personal experience, but I copied down two punctuation suggestions.
Delights await me, I shrug, "ooh what a treat!"--I'd recommend placing a period After shrug and capitalizing Ooh.
Diana! "I'm returning to Budapest.--I'd suggest Placing the speech marks before Diana.
I hope you're at peace with his decision. Thanks for sharing.
Take care,
Russell

A heartfelt piece Diana. Certainly a difficult situation from all sides. Interesting that last night I watched an episode of "Bull" who is a trial scientist and the case was about assisted death of a young girl who was dying of a horrible brain tumor. It was heartbreaking as well.
well done story in a poem on a most difficult subject.
Blessings

So moved was I by the first time I read your account of that final goodbye, I had to peruse it once more. I am reminded of my late husband who realised his end was near and wanted me to guarantee that his time would come. He was calm and philosophical. I have travelled the cancer route but I think mental illness must be far more challenging.

Incredible poem. You must miss your brave and brilliant friend - but it sounds like he left the world the way he lived - consciously. This really tore at my heart strings. Beautiful poem.

Hi Artasylum,
This is a great story poem. The meter was very good. The first and fourth lines rhyme, some times slanted very well. This poem has 15 stanzas which nowadays is an epic poem. It definitely has a lot of emotion within it. Awesome of you to help the Paranoid schizophrenic people. My sister has the same diagnose and she has disappeared. We cannot find her. Hey, Thank Leonard Cohen for the title.
Peace be with you,
Urial

It must have been hard to write and you wrote it beautifully. I guess your friend went out on his own terms. I can't imagine a life where you are totally in pain, physically or mentally so I find myself feeling only compassion for a life ended. I feel the poet has also recognised the pain of those left behind in this work.
