Wow - what a powerhouse of words, this poem, and SO DARN NEEDED, IMO!!! I wish I had a six for this - I ran out Sunday night. Your meter is strong, the internal rhyme and end rhyme wonderful... *sigh*... All combine to create a superlative message (delivered in fine, poetic form).

(A complete aside - I am still in shock over that jacket. I cannot imagine how the First Lady came to be wearing it at any time, never mind on such an occasion...) SHAME!

Most reacted to this poem in the same way...shock, disbelief at her actions. Some took my criticism of her apparel choice very seriously. Each time I wonder how Trump can maintain a 41% approval record, I read responses such as those I got to this and my other "political" poem and I see that his supporters are as passionate about their perception as I am about mine. This is not uncommon in a free country. What is uncommon is this constant divisive language from the White House and it's trickle down effect to the citizenry. I do not see how wearing "I don't care" on your back opens up any kind of meaningful dialogue by the first lady. I was aghast.

    Thank you,

In her defense it was speaking to the news media and all the fake news they spout about the pres. Had nothing to do with the children. I guess even the pres wife gets pretty fed up with only hearing the worst, mush of it untrue. She is a very compassionate person from what I have seen. Spending much time at hospitals. I have never seen her lash out in interviews or be disrespectful to anyone. One jacket with words taken out of contest with a hating press fueling it shouldn't detract from the good she has done. She is very quite and behind the scenes most of the time. It was not the wisest thing to do, and she should have known the press would twist it. Live and learn, even when you are the pres. wife. =}

With all due respect she has not explained the reason for her apparel choice...her husband said it was referring to fake news. Any person who wishes to comment on the press should do so--"I don't care" is open to misinterpretation even if she did intend to aim it at the press. It was not wise. It reflects poorly on our country. The press did not twist those words...they came on the jacket. They reported it. I did not need anyone to tell me it was in poor taste. I respect your right to your interpretation...that is what we do in this country, have free and differing discourse. Someone ought to remind Melania's husband of that.

    Thanks,

Free speech is very much threatened in the country today. It is very scary to know you dare not disagree or they will seek to destroy you. I truly believe one day free speech will be a thing of the past.

Hell, I haven't recognized our country for quite some time, Karenina.
Abolishing the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policies of our military.
Allowing same sex marriages.
The jailing of ministers refusing to do a same sex marriage ceremony.
Restaurants opening men's and women's rest rooms to transgenders.
Being permitted to say the names of Allah or Buddha in our schools, but God forbid you say the name of Jesus Christ.
It's ridiculous.
We're on a fast train to hell and it ain't equipped with any breaks.
Just my thoughts...

Indeed on all sides the reasonable route has been abandoned. Everyone is pulling outward from the center of the core of America....how long before we break apart? It is disheartening and worrisome. Thanks for your comments and may we find our way back to some semblance of sanity....

Really? How could someone be so insensitive?
I don't understand what is going on in America. Has everyone gone insane?
Best of luck to you.

OH, well. Seems we are a different country since Donald Trump--though fair to say I have had extremely passionate responses telling me I am wrong in my perception. Nonetheless I speak out through poetry, as is the long tradition in poetry over centuries...to comment on social and political situations.

    Thanks,

Well, her father doesn't, so why should she. To be honest, I thought he would never get in or you guys would have voted him out by now. America might be lucky, someone might shoot him. Great poem and thank you for sharing.

I would never wish him physical harm. I wish he could turn a corner and succeed for the sake of the country. I SEE NO SIGNS OF THAT!

A very strong expressed write, line structuring makes this write appeal, creating in my opinion its smooth flow of defined sequences. All in my opinion of this work.

You express your opinions well in this post, though I must disagree with your views.

We are witnessing a non-military invasion intended to take advantage of our national compassion for the downtrodden. It has been orchestrated for decades by globalists and leftists intent on destroying our country because we stand in the way of their evil plot to enslave the world and then depopulate it to under five hundred thousand more easily controlled impoverished serfs.

The Democrats along with some establishment Republicans WANT this to remain unresolved in order to use it as a campaign issue in hope of increasing their seats in Congress and in state legislatures. They also support "sanctuary" cities and states (such as California), which amount to the same kind of twisted thinking as exhibited by the antebellum Democrats who pushed secession and war to retain their grip on slave labor. Their recent calls for throwing Trump supporters and Republicans in general out of restaurants mimics similar attitude towards Jews and Blacks decades ago, and their calls for violence are inciting riots and such events as the mass assassination attempt against Republicans going to practice for the Congressional baseball game.

The major news media are complicit in it all. Anyone holding up a pretend severed head of Obama would not have lived to see the next day, but such vicious public "free speech" against Trump and his family is condoned and even cheered.

It's too bad no one was level-headed enough to warn Melania that her jacket would provide fodder for those seeking it, if worn on this particular occasion. She was trying to tell those getting a kick out of publicly trashing her that they were not getting to her, but she picked the wrong time to do it. She certainly did more than Michelle O did to see what really was going on at the border.

The pictures recently shown were taken during the Obama administration. The "caged" boy was part of a protest AT THAT TIME that was kept from public view; and most other protestors were holding up SIGNS. The "cage" was actually a TWO-piece foldable wire fence with NO back, other side, top, or bottom -- the one side turned at right angles to the front so the front would not fall. Then a close-up picture was taken so that the white, non-immigrant boy (voluntarily on the pretend "inside") would seem caged; and his father, standing nearby, would not be visible. This is a classic media LIE by time displacement and omission of key detail, intentionally to incite public wrath against the wrong target.

When O said he wanted to "fundamentally transform" our nation, he meant it. The purpose of this orchestrated invasion is to alter the demographics of our country through influx of those who are culturally ignorant of its founding principles and ongoing basis for freedom and prosperity. They are encouraged NOT to assimilate, just take what they can and remain dependent on handouts from the Democrats to assure their grip on power through their votes later on (legally or not). As I said, this is NOT immigration, which can be done legally, but sneaky INVASION. That's why the Democrats don't want a wall to stop it.

If the invasion continues, we can look at Europe to see our future as our culture crumbles. Attempts to dupe us through our compassion MUST be seen for what they really are -- BEFORE it is too late.

I value your smarts. I respect your passion. I worry when anyone speaks out for an entire party or movement. You, sadly, seem to include me in questioning my motivations for speaking out. Our previous communication would, I hope, convince you I am not a power mongering democrat planning a sneaky invasion...nor that I don't believe in borders. Asylum is not INVASION in my opinion. Are there phony claims? Certainly. Should those seeking asylum be refused due process? Not in the America I envision. I appreciate your interpretation of Melania's apparel statement--but you do not now that to be her motivation anymore than I know she meant to seem heartless. It was inappropriate, again, in my opinion. Did I once mention I thought holding up a severed head was right-minded? Of course not. There are plenty of actions and demonstrations on both sides that have gone too far.

I will continue to respect your right to interpret the political agenda as you truly believe it. I ask for the same respect. The Mike I have come to know would certainly provide that.

    Thanks,

    K

K, for long-term political purposes, these children are being USED to convince genuinely bighearted Americans like you to let them in; and traitor George Soros is FUNDING it through his many organizations, as revealed here:
    https://americauncensored.com/billionaire-traitor-funding-army-illegals/

I am NOT accusing YOU as favoring ANY of the nonsense. The leftists have developed the art of accusing others of exactly what THEY, themselves, are doing (or have done), to deflect attention away from where it belongs. The corrupt news media aid that effort by time-displacement of the story when possible, as well as selective reporting -- in this case to blame Trump for Obama's deeds:

REAL refugees from tyranny go to designated entry ports and legally apply for entry. They go as individual families, NOT in a caravan with Mexican crime cartels running the operation and exacting horrid "fees" from the travelers for their "help" just to get to our border or be smuggled in.

At the designated legal ports of entry, the genuine parents are NOT separated from their children, and the family is either accepted or denied for specific reasons, such as disease that would be a threat here. That principle has been in effect for ages -- including when both sets of my grandparents came here from Europe in the late 1890s and went through the process at Ellis Island. (The Statue of Liberty was still new enough to be coppery brown at the time.) Had they been sick or lacked the skills to be self-supporting once here, they would have been returned to the ship that brought them. Once here, they learned English, assimilated, became loyal citizens, and made a living (though never became wealthy).

During Obama's terms in office, flyers were distributed in countries south of Mexico urging people to come here and coaching them in what to say at the border. Chaos-monger Soros funded a lot of it -- and still does.

Separation of children from adults (who may or may not actually be their parents or even relatives) ramped up under Obama because they suddenly were coming in too fast to handle efficiently with available personnel. Protests ramped up then too, but the news media minimized that until NOW, in hope of influencing the 2018 midterm elections in November.

The ONLY way to stop all this is to build the wall, but the Democrats are unanimously resisting that because they want the issue in hope it will gain them votes in November. They care NOTHING about those children other than as potential future Democrat voters. They know the wall will solve the problem, but can't stand the notion that Trump will succeed in keeping yet another campaign promise. The globalists don't want resolution either, as that would interfere with their plot to destroy this country.

You are welcome, K. Apart from all the rest, I agree that Melania should have realized that wearing that jacket could be used to make her seem uncaring of the children she went to check on instead of scorning the news media who have been harassing her. (I wear NO clothing with blatant branding, and never had any bumper stickers or window lettering on my car while I had it.) I hope she learned something from her experience.

It is an outstanding poem. It is a poem that tells a story and sends a message. It is a poetic read.
It fell a little shy of getting six stars, but it was tempting to do that.
I really enjoyed reading a well written poem about an issue that faces our country.

I'm not in it for the stars, but thanks for saying it came close. It is my view expressed poetically and it has either rallied or ruffled feathers depending on political leaning. The sin would be to not speak out...for any and all dialogue is better than no attempt to understand the other's point of view.

Hopefully, the children can't read English. Melanie seems oblivious to how this choice of fashion comes across.
Skillfully written couplets that carry a dire message.
As you say in the notes: I no longer recognize our country.

I have gotten some serious feedback. I can handle it. All are entitled to their views...
Including me. I think her apparel was inappropriate and sent the wrong global message...

Others have interpreted for her and informed e what her motivation was...
Conjecture, as only her husband has commented on what she "meant."

I was not na•ve enough to think I wouldn't ruffle some feathers.

America, land of the free...dissent among citizens ought to be encouraged.
    It's how we learn.

I am not sorry for expressing my view--but I defend the right of those who passionately disagree to express theirs.

    Thanks,
