Wonderful poem. Well written and very smoothly rhymed and, of course, the subject matter couldn't be more important. Great thoughts for this Holiday.

Beautiful tribute to our flag in a day where it is not so popular and the sad thing is, it isn't popular with it's own citizens. We are so foolish not to cherish the freedom that it stands for. People are such spoiled brats these days. Well done and the different font colors and a great touch. Rox

Hi, Dove,

Thank you for sharing your patriotic poem for the flag. I love the flag of the US, and I'm very proud I served, along with my hubby, and children. The Star-Spangled-Banner still gives me goosebumps.

Yes, tomorrow is Flag Day, and the flags will be out all over the country,

~patty~

I appreciate our private messaging before I leave a review. It is important to me that you've acknowledged that the symbolization of the red/white/blue of our flag is your own interpretation and not fact.

Fact is important. I applaud you for writing about Flag Day, but feel it is important to inform the reader that the ACTUAL meaning of the colors of the American Flag are:

White signifies purity and innocence

Red signifies hardiness & valour

Blue signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice

(Reference: usflag.org/colors.html)

I'd hate to think someone leaves your poem thinking any part of our flag stands for "the blood shed;
Our mourned-for dead"

This is your perspective, but not truth...

Likewise with the other definitions you offer.

    Dear Karenina, I was thinking about all the wars we've had, not just the Civil War. I meant that the colors I defined (red, white and blue) were personal definitions to me. Thank you for your rating and comments. Dove

    Dear Karenina, Thank you for changing your review. And you're right, I should let everyone know that the colors were my own interpretation, I'm sorry about my error. Donna (Dove)

This is a very good red, white, and blue poem. You capture all the nuances and meaning of the flag. It explains why we fly it and pledge our allegiance to it.
