"Preferring instead to make war and oppress,"...You have my attention...
"Yet how we malign the poor innocent dog,
comparing its work to our sad catalogue
of treacheries, subterfuge, lies and deceit--
a slanderous grab-bag we lay at its feet."...this stanza flows like a river, beautiful!
Great closing line too...what IS our excuse? Thought-provoking words, loved it.

accountable for our deeds come judgement day;
so why are the kings and the queens in this plot
a violent, self-absorbed, arrogant lot?
This piece had amazing verses and lines but that was my favorite, great work

I must have missed something, I guess I'm obtuse--
forgive me for asking, but what's our excuse?
What is our excuse for judging so harshly? It's a great question. For we are so quick to point the finger and spew out hatred.
In relation to your poem, our first job was to take care of animals and the natural world, but we take that a step further and judge animals below us. We do have dominion over them, but that isn't license, and it doesn't detract from our responsibility. to them. We judge the less than us mostly because they don't speak our languge. My poem was about judging parents by the sins of the children. Something that happens to my family a lot, for some reason, and its totally ridiculous.
We can only treat animals the way God does and that's with respect and care. In the old Jewish law, you had to feed your laboring animals before yourself and you weren't to muzzle the ox that treads out the corn. Yet today, they are nothing but commodities. So sad, or being hunted to extinction for one of their body parts, like Tusks, don't get me started. I've always loved animals, and I get very upset about seeing them hurt in any way, more upset that people, if the truth be known, because most of us aren't worth feeding, LOL Great poem, and thanks for sharing it, Ana.

Many thanks, Ana. I will check out your poem as well. In so far as other species go, I think they are almost invariably better off if we just leave them alone. Other species deserve our respect. Sadly, many of our own species clearly don't. Most grateful for the thoughtful response - Craig
