Everything seems to move so very fast -- I was just getting settled into knowing the main character when, suddenly, everything about her life was unimportant and everything changed. And, actually, that was okay.....but I would have liked the familiarity of calling Mrs. Schlanchfeld "mom" to take a little longer....maybe earned...?
Really enjoyed the spark of defiance and independence she shows with her comment "I am many things, but I am certainly not a poor little girl".....would like to see THAT girl built up some more rather than just simple acceptance of what seems to be circumstances taken out of her control.
I REALLY like the idea your portraying here -- "the 'nothing' she thought herself to be is really so much more than she realizes" -- it is such an empowering message for young people, both male and female! Just be sure not to let the supporting characters take away her choices and her control of who she is ..... and is to become!
I look forward to the next chapter. :-)

The witch and her cat caught my imagination. I enjoyed it and was disappointed when there was no more to read. I woukd like to know more about what the witch and her cabin look like. Nice work, an entertaining story!
