'I pounded my cleats against my leg to make sure I had not died and was now a resident of baseball heaven.'
We can feel the almost surreally religious childhood dream scenario
and the pterosaurus in the stomach...awesome imagination!
Only a player of the game could describe so painfully the feeling of the athlete's body as it is pushed to its limits. Nicely done.
Love your twist at the end of Bro Ralph being 'real'.
I loved also your ability to pull the reader into the excitement, the remembrance, of what it's like to be a kid:
details like the locker door bouncing back and hitting the next locker pull us in to the whole moment-by-moment experience. The excitement leading to tiny mindless moments like forgetting to remove shoes while dressing and ending up hitting a knee, then sprawling out on the floor, make the whole scene believable, humorous and semi-tragic at the same time.

A boney ass was the star of the day. Bet that's not happened too often.
This was told fantastically well. You achieved the writer's dream. You rivetted the reader's attention from the first word to the last. Harry, or should I still call you boney ass, this story would not be out of place in a Reader's Digest first person story. I believe it is that good.

Thank you so much for your read and encouraging words. Luckily, "boney ass" faded after I left high school.

Great story. I have seen may spring training games as my bro is a fanatic and would come to FL to visit just to see the games. He hasn't been back since they moved the teams to AZ. ={ Tim Tebow played last season close to where I live and my friends and I went. It was the biggest crowd they had ever had at that ball park. Tim knows how to draw a crowd. What a great memory for you to have scored in a series. Sorry you didn't win it, but it is still something to write about. Really great writing and a fun story to read. What a "great" baseball story. I loved reading it and appreciate you sharing it with us. We love baseball too. Today, we flew to Boston to go to a Red Sox game tomorrow vs. Atlanta. It was our son's choice of a college grad gift. We are so excited to see Fenway park tomorrow. You did a great job on this story and I'm so glad you have a wonderful memory to reflect on..... and its about baseball too!!

Hi, Harry;
Thank you for sharing this true story about your baseball glory days. I think my favorite part of the story was about the new uniform jerseys. Your metaphor about how they were like 'new Easter clothes' worked so well.
Good luck to you in the contest,
~patty~

To be perfectly honest with you I don't have a single clue about the game, nothing whatsoever which means like it or not, your entertaining write here kept me reading. I basically still don't know a thing but I loved the write and I thank you for it...Dinah
"Get your boney ass home!" ...this brought a big chuckle that's for sure.
