This is terrific, Rod. I am most fond of traditional gardens and by the sounds of it your father had a number of grand ones, with the boxwood hedge, hibiscus, roses and hydrangea and importantly porcelain pots. Perfect!
Great job and I hope you share more of these my friend. :)

What a simply splendid poem - wonderful rhyme, lilting meter, all describing with such warmth and sentiment, a time spent with someone who was obviously well-loved. The scenes came alive for me. I wish I still had a six left to adorn this exquisite verse. Beautiful!

What a lovely memory you have of your father and grandfather. I admire anyone who can plant and grow, as I've always failed at it. When I remember my mother I always remember how much she loved her plants.

To be exposed as a child to such natural beauty can be a life altering experience. How awesome to learn the difference between natural beauty and man made beauty, Gold and tin, false and true. Never will you be fooled or misled by someone trying to pour mud on you while claiming that it is raining.

Indeed this experience was memorable if not ?life altering? for grandpa?s daughter. She now cultivates her own garden (mostly vegetables) with great affection. Thanks for reviewing.

I believe I remember reading, "Grandma in Her Garden," and was very touched by the effort put into the wording which evokes so much emotional depth to BOTH of your poems. I enjoyed reading this so much. Thanks for sharing those precious moments from your memories.

Comment from June Sargent
There is something special about a formal garden. In a world full of chaos, the garden provides a sense of stability. The roses will bud every year in the same spot. And the hydrangea will continue to offer various shades of blue every season. Thank you for taking us on a tour of Grandpa's lovely garden.

Wow! I had not thought of the theme of STABILITY while writing this poem, June, but you are absolutely right. To my father that garden did represennt a kind of stability, or rather, the maintenance of the status quo. He hated to see change, especially in the natural world he surrounded himself with. Thank you so much for your wonderful insights and that six-star bonus. Rod

Your word choices always put me right in the places you describe, and nudge my dormant thoughts and emotions to fascination. And I'm not even a wanna be gardener. Thanks for sharing another fine poem. :-)

Fabulously told. You had mesmerized with that clever first two lines:
"My grandpa squired me through his realm,
New Camelot where he did reign."
I immediately imagined a child helping and learning all kinds of secrets to gardening from a grandfather in a magical kind of way.
