Good write up. One of my wife's carers is separated from her husband. Funny thing is they had all their children out of wed lock then after they married they broke up! Go figure. She is a lovely woman and I can't understand why her ex has left her or maybe he got found out and she decided to break up. Good picture.

Excellent poem. All the lines rhyme and I see no grammatical mistakes anywhere. This sounds like that person has a curse over him and can't do anything about it. It's stuck to him forever. I like this poem.

I was glad to learn from your notes that this free verse was not autobiographical. You certainly captured the sense of angst, and your use of alliteration added to the intensity of the theme. Sighs- Joan

So true, You can be married and yet there's is nothing to talk about. The marriage is dead, and the separation within is a state of fact. Been there and done it, and I've just divorced. I'm happy. I can so identify with this. A wonderful free verse poem. All the best. Ulla:)))

Visions of copulating skunks making love on my bed and--God save me--they danced in my head! Loved the begging for sanity after that image.

Your impressive free verse gave free rein to my imagination. And, really, isn't that the point?

Well done, Susan!!

Strong free verse piece. This one really had the feel of something very contemporary, right of Poetry magazine, or Ploughshares. The language has that intensity to it, that gritty feel, and the images are kind of dark, muddy, hard, cold. We seem to be talking to ourselves more and more. estory

Thanks a lot estory for the very heartwarming six stars. Words won't be enough to express my gratitude for appreciating the merits of my humble piece. You have encouraged me to do better although I cannot really post regularly poems in the frequency that other poets do here in this site. Again, thank you very much.

Very powerful poem, Susan. Your strong word choices create a feeling of contempt with the skunks, and past the lacquered tomorrow. At least that's how my senses "feel" your free verse.

That said, very well done and illustrative poem about musing on separation.

Thank you for sharing.

Gloria

I had to laugh at the first stanza, to replace the man with skunks, lol, that is extreme! But, as you say in your author's notes, separation in marriage is the pits. Its sad, but happens a lot. Well done on allowing your muse to roam. :) Sandra xx

Bravo in so powerfully capturing the emotions that come with the gut-wrenching trauma of a marriage breaking up. I really liked :
"a meaningless, verbless life
from past to lacquered tomorrow, "
It shows the ennui and depression that comes with separation.

I like this part -- "sadly, I measure
a meaningless, verbless life
from past to lacquered tomorrow, "

How does a lacquered tomorrow look? but it is good verse, good poetry. all lines in a poem should attempt to be so poetic.

Thanks for sharing
