I just now read this story after seeing that you won first place in the contest. What a fantastic tale. I'm glad you were able to capitalize on this unbelievable turn of events with a prize-winning story. Congratulations. Marge

Hey, Don. I must admit I was a bit stumped as well at all the simultaneous improbables. At least thinks worked out in the postscript. I wonder how many times the old woman has pulled this stunt?

Countless. She got into the game at age twenty, majoring in drama in college. She could have been a star, but this challenge suited her better. She stopped using age makeup at seventy.
Thanks for your interest, Chuck.

Wow! How could any experience be worse than this? I am surprised by the behavior of the old woman. You saw her drop the groceries. Why would she not tell the truth? She was not coming from church but from a grocery story. Well, anyway you have my sympathy and my admiration for a well told story and for your ability to survive such ill treatment. Good luck in the contest. MM

Thank you for your kind words, MissMerri. You are a compassionate person, but you have been misled.
My story is all a big fib. It never happened. It's fiction. If you have a minute, read the author's notes, and you'll see i wasn't trying to fool anyone.

I really enjoyed this story. You got a great lead. Brings attention to how easy it is for people to set you up, even older women. What a mysterious and suspenseful run of events that made man seem guilty. You got my thumbs up so good luck! Liberty justice

I really liked this one. You did a nice job telling your story in limited words.
I've never heard of such a thing happening. Truly there are all kinds of people in this world...

Thanks, Cupa. It's very gratifying to hear that you liked my story.
(But just between you and me, it didn't actually happen. It's fiction.)

lol, doesn't matter I still liked it...

Oh my goodness!
Darn 300 word limit!
Well, I must say that your experience is one in which I could certainly relate. Now, the particulars of which you write have never happened, but I certainly have had moments in my life where a good deed went sour: Like during my first year of teaching in a very small town and purchasing a pair of winter gloves for a young high school boy whose hands were bleeding from the cold...only to be accused of having an affair with the boy. Of course, this was 40 years ago...before social workers would have been involved with a situation like this boy was living... Such is life.
Glad you got off! Fine story and well-crafted!

Thanks for your comments, Diane.
(I'm glad you appreciated my big fib. It's fiction, you know.)

What an amazing story and supports the adage that truth is stranger than fiction because I too would have stopped to help the woman. Maybe that's one good thing about all the camera's on the streets today (red light cameras, bank cameras, etc) -- because hopefully her next victim will have an electronic witness to exonerate them.
This is clearly the best written story and one that truly fits the "no good deed goes unrewarded." You've got my vote--good luck in your contest.

Had me thinking it must be a true story. Then I scrolled back. I thought it was a credible read, and had me wondering. I could imagine your descriptions and how this conflict got into court. And yes, I've heard and seen my fair share of those kind of judges. Very good.
