Reading this reminds me that even an 8 year old can look back and think about how mature and even old they thought they were at 5 years. Perhaps this is a universal
of some kind in the human mind. We are always also hoping to be younger, and older persons always seem ancient.

Very true, Doug. When young, the world is our oyster where age or the undefined do not come into question. Hope is initiated by possible, and realizations are often far from the truth.

Smiling! This is a well written poem. I have three teenage grandsons and while they are great kids, they have their rebellious side. I'm so happy they are grandsons and and go back to their parents to deal with their rebellious side.

Once a rebel always a rebel, don't tell me how to live. Chaos is my middle name and that's me to the core. At least this is what your poem says to me. The use of shit jarred me at the end. If I were you I would remove it. Be a rebel yes but use of throwing profanity in does nothing to promote your rebellion. (LOL)

Yes, hope as in the sense you speak here does not exist in the vocabulary or thoughts of youth.
with age brings a cherished wisdom and hopefully a determination to not be reticent or unsure of reaching out for our dreams..

But just as Adolf Hitler did when he reneged on his alliance with the Soviet Union during WWII, it later becomes are most feared adversary.
