Well, I hope Tom was changed by that. Loved how you addressed that misconception and negative view of the future. True, that these people had experienced bad things to make them pessimistic but Mrs. Armstrong sure knew how to change their perspective!

Under-achievers are often quick to fire off when they feel cornered as Tom did here when you asked that question. He immediately became defensive and demanding to retain his privacy. Well if your privacy is all you have got, as it probably was in Tom's case then you tend to hang on to it very possessively. You handled the outburst well in my opinion.

Awww again thank you so much. I fully agree that when cornered the majority number of people tend to get defensive., time will tell.

This is a right to the point instructor seeking a baseline from which she may effectively influence her students. Tom is a student who needs a direction and a goal. Maybe the Medical field is not for him. I would ask the Student Counselor to have a session with him. I wish she would have told him about that. Maybe this work is about a mediocre instructor.
