This isn't far-fetched scenario any longer as I've been saying now myself for quite some time, Craig.
Panic ensued in Hawaii for about 40 minutes this past Saturday after a false emergency alert notice was issued: "BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL", which was also apparently sent to thousands of people's mobile phones, and an alert also appeared on television. Thank God it was only a false alarm -- Hawaii's Emergency Management Agency quickly tweeted that there was no missile threat to the state, although it took 38 minutes before a second emergency alert was sent saying that there was no imminent danger.
Scary stuff...

Sure is. I Wonder how they would have felt if a stack of people had killed themselves, rather than face annihilation by nuclear radiation? Cheers, Craig.

Powerful piece. I like the term, too. I imagine if another Hawaii-style alert went out and was not corrected in time, a lot of folks would do something crazy that they would later regret. I wonder if that happened in Hawaii? Forty minutes is not very long when you're trying to get to safety (as if there is anywhere to go), so maybe they were too busy to think about death. Anyway, the false alarm could mean that a REAL alarm could be ignored. Heck, I'm heading for ground zero if I can get there in time. Beats living afterwards!

You just might be on to something there, Phyllis. Although, I have a sneaking suspicion it won't come to that. I see us more likely to just slowly poison the air so we've got nothing left to breathe. Something that will ensure a slow and agonising demise for the species. Still, I could be wrong, and maybe this is exactly how it will play out. (Yes - I'm the life of the party, I know!)
