This is a wonderful account of your father and Stoney and I enjoyed the read from beginning to end. You do have a way with words and the natural flair for story telling. Thanks for sharing fun in this post. All the best.

I think you have a winner here Dennis. I certainly hope so. This is hilarious, embellished or not, it is a fine tale. You truly are a great story teller.

Very nicely done my friend and the best of luck.

A hilarious story. That's got to be the winner. I had an uncle who was an alcoholic. He wife trying to prevent him from going to a bar hid his car keys. He jumped on the John Deer and rode his tractor to the bar. A few weeks later he fell asleep in the snow and died. Anything for a drink.

Hi Dennis,

Very well told, my friend. lol I hope this wins.

They are like the little sprigs of parsley on the dinner plate; no one swallows them, but they add artistry to the presentation. - that's very nice and very true.

Deniz: great humor story about the dead horse. How does one ride
this horse? I'm glad that he had other horses to help him. Glad to
see you on this site. Have a great new year. flylikeaneagle

No Roman General, riding in the finest of chariots, could surpass Stoney's majestic composure, as he stood (literally) true to the old Yankee maxim; "Buy it cheap, wear it out, sell it dear".
There was no market for dead horses, but getting one last ride out a dead horse will do for the last part of the Yankee rule of thrift.
My astonished Dad met the funeral procession on the road, and that's why you are reading this story today. That, and the $100.00 prize, of course.'
WOW. I love the old-world charm of this. It is a great story for the competition, I enjoyed it thoroughly well done and kindest regards Meia xx

Most enjoyable, but sad too. As a horse owner I've lost my share of beloved equines. One to a jet that flew at roof level and broke the sound barrier. Rusty hit his head on the stall door and died instantly. I still cry if I dwell...but I enjoyed your style and wish this were longer. And couldn't see any nits. Best in the contest too! Susan

Thanks, Susan, and sincere sympathy regarding Rusty. Animals do have a way of capturing our hearts. I spent a summer on my Great Uncles farm when I was about eleven. I never thought about it at the time, but he used a team of horses to plow, or cut hay, while his perfectly good tractor sat idly by.

Now I know he loved horses. He had been in charge of 20 teams for a logging operation in his younger days. He was by no means (in all outward appearances at least) a sentimentalist. He knew how to work them but also how to take proper care of them. Fond memories of a day that was passing... Dennis

Thank you for sharing with me Dennis...I admire the old ways too. My dad used horses but way before I came along in '55.

One last ride to get all he could out of this poor horse. Stoney sounds quite the character.

I love stories like this. It's up to the listener to believe or not. I think Stoney rode the horse to the grave, just like your daddy said.

Good luck in the contest.
