This is a super write. I often roast beets and other veggies as I'm vegetarian. They take on a whole new flavor when roasted. Your write is very clever as is the title itself.
"stained bloody from the crime
of loving them too much."

Yes, Marilyn, beets take on a whole new flavor when roasted. I like adding to mine aromatics like garlic, orange peel, and bay leaves. Thank you for your delicious review.

I love it! Great poem that gave me the feeling of feeling bad about eating meat but eating it anyway! It's short, illustrative and awesome! Keep up the great work and I'm glad I found you here!

Hi SC, I like this very much. There are lots of double meanings in this write. I like the play on the crime of passion being the narrator loves to eat beets once they are cooked. The beet itself could have a double meaning of rhythm as well--as in poetry. I though you used word economy and concrete images to good effect to create a complete idea in the mind for the reader--and left just enough room for interpretation. Great poem and happy new year.

Oh, thank you, Catch22, for your generous, six star review and also for comparing my "Drive-In Intermission" poem to William Carlos Williams' "The Red Wheelbarrow." I took another look at Williams' Imagist poem and can see how you saw the similarities--one sentence broken up at intervals.

For over a week I struggled to write a followup poem on beets, but it expanded to 140 lines that took me away from my experience of peeling warm beets in my stained hands. At four on Friday morning I awoke with the thought, "How about you write the poem as one sentence like Williams' 'The Red Wheelbarrow?'" Without looking at my original draft, I came up with a new line I wrote on a Post-It note I kept in my shirt pocket next to my heart all day until I could post it in the evening.

I thank you tremendously for comparing my previous poem to William Carlos Williams' because it gave me a solution to write a second poem. I started New Year's day by reading poetry from around the world because I never know where I might get a new idea.

Your review is spot on in its analysis of the double meaning and word economy of my poem. I thank you tremendously.

I wish you a happy New Year, too.

Hi Sis Cat, I'm not a fan of beets, but that does not take away from this fantastic poem you've written. Great description and imagery used. The artwork is perfect!

MelB, I did say that it is a crime to love beets, so you are innocent and your hands are clean. Thank you for your review and for complimenting my poem's description and imagery.

SisCat,
Happy New Year to you too!! There is 36 minutes left of 2017. For me, a year of loss and gain. I lost Kameo, my cat of 16 years, and my blood brother. I hope next year is better.
How are you? I hope you do well in the contest. You did well. I love beets too!
Take care,
Nome

First of all, Rasmine, I am sorry for your loss of your cat Kameo. Having lost a couple of cats myself years ago, I know it can be devastating. The recovery from such a loss can take a long time. We can hope that next year will be better.

Thank you for your review. While this poem is not a FanStory contest entry, so many reviewers have wished me well on this poem that I will submit it to a journal or contest outside of FanStory.

I am doing fine reading and writing. I wish you a happy New Year, too. I have three-and-a-half hours to go on the West Coast.

Are you moving? I live on the east coast, if you are near to me, I could go to a poetry reading of yours. :P

No, Rasmine, I am not moving any time soon.

Fun poem full of texture and sight references to awaken the senses. The hands being "turned bloody from the crime of loving them too much" seems to have more than one meaning: Loving the taste would cause one to make them often and have read hands, and Loving the beet would suggest perhaps squeezing it a bit harder then necessary and getting more "red" on the hands.

"The Red Wheelbarrow" is a great poem and I am also a fan of William Carlos Williams.

Enjoyed the poem in it's simplicity/brief words and in its strength in evoking strong sensory response.

Mvbrooks, I counted 138 draft lines of this poem in my notebook and Word Doc. After a week, the poem kept going on and on without an end in sight. I did not know how to resolve it. And then Catch22 compared my previous poem, "Drive-In Intermission," to Williams' "The Red Wheelbarrow." When I studied his poem, I can see how Catch22 saw similarities. Both poems were written in one line broken up at intervals and they contain strong imagery. I awoke at four Friday morning with an idea, "How about I write my beet poem as one sentence broken up at intervals and focus on the senses of peeling that still warm beet in stained hands?" Without looking at my old draft of a beet epic, I wrote a new poem on a Post-It note which I kept in my shirt pocket next to my heart all day until I can post the poem Friday evening. The two things I learned about this poem were the importance to be mindfully present--I was peeling beets for a potluck when the idea of a poem first came to me--and the importance to read a lot of poetry, because some poet out there may have a solution for a poem I struggled with.

Thank you for your generous, six star review and thoughtful comments. I wish you a happy and safe New Year, too.

Sis Cat: hope you are having a fun New Year's Day.
I'm watching CNN chatter. Yes, I love beets, too. I cut
the peelings off first and chop them. They are so tasty.

I made lamb stew with three potatoes and lots of veggies
earlier. I like to cook and experiment with food.

We have -21 degrees here in Minnesota. Enjoy.

Wow, Nancy, 21 degrees in Minnesota?! You better save those roasted beets and put them under your mattress to keep you warm at night. Thank you for your review and have a fun New Year's Day, too.

Sis Cat: I've been roasting squash with olive oil.
We have to layer up with blankets and heaters. The dogs don't want to walk and lift a leg - "Cold, Momma." I give them hot dog buns as a treat.

Yes _____ 21 minus 21 here in Minnesota. New York looks cold, too. Happy New Year! nancy

Yummy beets! I really like your poem and the photo is a great match for this writing. Your style was good and had correct balance and weight. Well done. Regards.

Thank you, Sugarray77, for your review. The way I write my poems is to base them on an actual experience, for example, peeling roasted beets to make a salad for a Christmas potluck. Only after I write my poem, do I find a photo to match it.
