Beets can grow on one who acquires the taste, I love them. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very interesting read. There is very good imagery.

Thank you, c_lucas, for your review and for complimenting my good imagery. The Imagist poem The Red Wheelbarrow by William Carlos Williams inspired me to write my poem as one sensory-filled sentence broken up at intervals.

Thank you, Kathleen, for your review and Happy New Year to you, too. After I roasted and peeled beets for a Christmas potluck, I spent a week writing my poem, and then I found a perfect picture to compliment it. Thanks again.

Years ago, beets were used as makeup and were a semi permanent stain for the lips and cheeks for women. Today one can buy the same 'Lip and cheek stains' for upwards of twenty dollars- their main ingredient, beet juice and some added fragrance and usually nothing more. Since I flush naturally I have never used blush but I have stained my lips with beet juice on purpose using a paintbrush. If it gets on your hands, that is a NIGHTMARE. I love LOVE beets roasted and I ALSO drink the juice. It is the single best food or drink that you could consume, clearing arterial plague fat deposits, help with type 2 Diabetes, immediately lowering blood pressure and actually in enough quantities organic beet juice had been used to CURE CANCER. Roasted beets are something I have only just tried and I LOVE them. Only problem is, they are soooo hard to peel and chop! I do wish they sold them skinned but not pickled here. I think pickling removes some of the goodness but I can't be sure, One thing I am sure of is I love this write! Funny and clever and an unusual subject. Those of us who self identify as foodies, would be found guilty often as we daily murder those foods that we love. We devour them with such gusto that anyone watching may either be turned off or on, depending on them. The look of utter delight on my face when I am consuming a dish that is one of my particular favorites make me appear to going through a religious experience, so I am told. LOL

Yes, nomi338, eating food can be a religious experience. Early drafts of this poem referred to rituals and sacrifice. Thank you for your review and have a happy and safe New Year, too.

This is a very original poem. I'd never have thought of writing about a beet, mainly because I hate them.
I have never eaten them roasted. Are they nice that way?

Thank you, Maria, for your review. I did say that loving beets is a crime, so you are innocent. Two weeks ago I was peeling beets for a Christmas potluck when I paused a moment and thought, "This would make a great poem."
I only eat roasted beets, never raw or canned, and seldom pickled. I roast beets with half a dozen ingredients to infuse them with flavor and mask the earthiness. I use allspice, cloves, garlic, peppercorn, orange peel, lemon peel. After roasting with the beets, I may eat a clove of garlic and toss the rest of the ingredients, but the beets are very nice to eat.

Hi sis Cactus reminds me of a beautiful piece of artwork my daughter Korean creative beats in a bowl she did it all in colored pencils which is pretty amazing cuz it looks so realistic but the thanks for this well written piece but I don't like beat sorry doctor Ricky 1024
