What a clever poem! Not only have you presented a vegetable that some people love, you've done so with a great picture.
Now, the best part of all is the final line. It made me laugh, in a good way.
It made me almost want to eat a beet. Unfortunately, I don't like them cooked. Raw, I do, like in salads, and I like them pickled. Just not boiled.
Any rate, it's a wonderful poem.
Happy New Year,
Rhonda

Ah, Rhonda, I only eat roasted beets, never canned nor boiled. Lines from an early draft listed all of the ingredients I roast with beets to infuse them with flavor and mask the earthiness--allspice, cloves, peppercorns, garlic, lemon peel, orange peel . . . The list of ingredient went on so long that I abandoned the draft and started over again by just focusing on the warmth of the beets in the stained hands that peeled them. Thank you for your review and Happy New Year, too.

You actually make them sound good! I grew some this past year, but the rabbits got most of them. I'd love a list of your ingredients.

Yes, beets roasted in only plain water may taste earthy or even muddy. While some like that taste, I don't and add a lot of aromatics to the beets while roasting--smoked salt, rosemary, bay leaves, thyme . . . All of these aromatics and more infuse my beets with subtle flavors. Experiment but don't use cinnamon sticks. The flavor does not compliment beets.

Thank you so very much. I'll plant some more this Spring. I'll let you know how it goes!

Roasted beets? I've never had that. Interesting and apparently, really messy to eat! I like the word play that you incorporate in the poem as the redness of the beets does stain the hands of the eater!

Yes, lyenochka, I only cook and eat roasted beets, but never canned. They are not messy to eat if you do not mind the reddish urine afterwards, but they are messy to peel with bare hands. Thank you for your review. Have a Happy New Year.

Hi Andre
Just written a beet poem for a contest.
You seem to know what's good for you.
Just in case you didn't know.
Dandelion root is a component of liver detoxifiers.
Also a component of the famous ESSIAC TEA.
AND HOXEY formulas for cancer fighting.
This poem ends with victory in poetic form.
The crime of loving them too much.:-))Z.

Thank you, strandregs, for your review of my poem and for sharing information about the different uses of beets. I myself also enjoy dandelion greens but never knew you can eat the roots as well. Yes, loving such vegetables is a crime. Happy New Year.

I loved your poem and the great image that goes with it. I have to confess that I don't like beets, but I hear they are good for you. I'm more is a corn and peas lover.: ) Thanks for this fun poem.

I did say, Boogienights, that it is a crime to love beets, so you are innocent. If you are a corn and peas lover, write poems about that. Husking corn and shelling peas are atypical subjects for poets but create a challenge because these mundane activities are overlooked. Thank you for your review of my fun poem.

Very good. When I first saw the picture, I thought you had become a serial killer. I guess it could go either way. A beet is a living thing until you brutally rip it from the soil and stab it.

Oh yes, Thomas, the beet is a living thing until we rip it from the soil and stab it. My early draft included a line about the beets being "ripped from earth's breast" and I made comparisons to the Mayan practice of ripping out the hearts of sacrificed victims.
Thank you for your review and have a happy New Year.

Oh, no, ameen786, the picture did not inspire my write but my experience of peeling roasted beets for a Christmas potluck two weeks ago, pausing over the sink, my hands "bloody," and thinking, "This would make a great poem." The hardest thing I faced after I spent a week writing my poem was to find a perfect picture that best expresses my poem. Thank you for our review.

LOL - oh, Andre, this is a charmer, especially for a beet-lover! I haven't met a beet I didn't enjoy. (*grin*) Pickle them, boil them (but leave enough green above the bulb so they don't 'bleed' too much nutrient into the water), make juice from them - they're the best (and so is this poem)! (Now go wash away the evidence. *smile*)

Ha! I fixed fixed beets for an office potluck two weeks ago and my fingertips are still stained! Thank you for your review, fellow beet-lover.

It was my pleasure. :)

I love beets but I think I am the only one in my family that does. Roasted beets are my new favorite but they are messy no matter how you like them.
A nice compliment to be compared to "The Red wheelbarrow".
Well done Andre.
Blessings and Happy New Year

Yes, Janet, originally I wanted to write a long poem about beets but I was having problems with it. When Catch22 compared my previous poem to The Red Wheelbarrow, it gave me an idea to focus on one detail, one moment. Thank you for your review.

Thank you, Patricia, for your review. Butter sauce is a preparation I have never heard of before. I eat roasted beets in salads. Thank you for your review and I wish you a happy and safe New Year, too.
