This has to be the winner. It's just that beautiful. The painting too, a lovely watercolor sets off these sad words about old Leo. I loved this!! Blessings...

This sad poem, Summer's Gone, touches on those universal feelings that associate diminished physical capacity. As our past gets longer and future smaller, we can't help but ponder those greener shores we may now never see.

"His youth has fled; summer's gone. Nice analogy describing using personifications and humanizing summer. Makes for a nice comparison of the dog's aching bones to your aching bones. Is he eating well, probably needs some more cooked meat. lol liberty justice NICELY DONE!

Thank you for sharing "Summer's Gone," Liberty, and for your kind praise. At this time he was still eating well, but his muscles had atrophied.

This truely is a sad poem. I know just how you feel with the aches and pains. I sometimes think that being unaware of the aging process would make it easier, like the dog in your poem. I liked this poem very much and I wish you well in the contest.

A great tribute and a sad reminder of all those happy days when your dog was young and full of life. Old age gets us all in the end, great rhymes and flow, love Dolly x

Hello Summer's Gone: Word has it that dog is man's best friend. Sometimes I believe that only dogs really understand that. I once tried to be a better friend to my dog, than he was a friend to me. I couldn't do it. "Shaft," my German Shepherd dog, while I had to be out, stayed home and looked after Mom for me. I loved him for that. There are countless loving things my dog did for Mom and me. And he never did a single thing for us, because of something I did for him. He didn't even realize that I was doing for him. He did what he did because he loved Mom, and me. "Shaft," is gone. He was struck by an automobile. Mom is gone. God called her home. I am here. Mom is in me. "Shaft," is in me. I am alive. So is Mom and "Shaft." Summer is gone. But trust our God, my friend. Summer's going to "SPRING," right back.

Thank you so much for sharing "Summer's Gone." I am very sorry for your loss of Shaft and know how you feel now as I did lose Leo not long after writing this poem.

This Sad Poem submission is full of richly descriptive words that convey the symptoms of canine and human age. Arthritis is common in G. Shepherds' hips. I guess it's a blessing that our fur persons are oblivious to the passage of time. All the best in the contest! :0 GracieAnn

Thank you so much for sharing "Summer's Gone," GracieAnn, and your kind praise. Yes, Leo suffered terribly from arthritis but did love the sun.

Dear Mystery Writer,

This is a sad and compelling story. It's awfully hard to watch someone we love become less of themselves due to old age or infirmities. I think it was smart to use a pet in this situation- I think we can all relate to that. Thanks and good luck!

This is really a sad poem that is the hardest thing to see our pets age in front of us but then to relate it to ourselves. The presentation and style are lovely and a great contest entry, good luck.

A good poem, indeed sad.
Well stated. It's hard to watch our beloved pets get old.
Their time is done way to soon.
Love the picture, it's beautiful.
