Instead, he seemed to be looking down at something on road and was very still. I felt such an overwhelming sadness emanating from him that touched me to the core. There in front of him was another beautiful cardinal that appeared to have been run over. In that shared moment standing there, I felt his profound grief. Much later I found out that cardinals mate for life.' Straight up, this made me cry. I am heartbroken by birds who mate for life left without their mate. When humans cannot seem to do the same, love faithfully, it seems so sad. A beautifully told tragic true story, well done love and regards Meia xx

What a sad story. It is common knowledge when human couple marriage lasts for many years and suddenly one dies. It is not long before the survivor dies. I hope the bird finds another mate.

I enjoyed reading your true story and learned something new from it. It was very atmospheric and painted a lovely picture. I wish you good luck in the competition.

Thank you for this touching little piece. I am a birdwatcher and bird lover. I do believe birds have and demonstrate feelings even though most humans dismiss that idea as being silly thinking. I can vouch for the mating for life bit as I experienced that with a pair of wild geese when I was in Alaksa. Our guide had wounded one of the pair and it called out to the other one who flew overhead of our boat until the one that was shot died and made no more noise.

A touching story of grief witnessed in childhood. We sometimes forget that we are not the only beings in this marvellous world of ours that experience such feelings. Man's actions sometimes cause wider ripples of grief than we are aware of. Nicely written.
