Laura: I like your story about the cardinals. Yes, we see cardinals
in our pine trees. The male is the darker bird and he watches his mate.
I'm sure that this moment of time stuck in your head, birds watching
each other. The bird seemed to want to tell his story.
Nice story. flylikeaneagle - nancy

Yes so do Drongo's. Two came for a visit one day just after we moved into a new rental. A man with a bird aviary shot one that was hanging around his caged birds. The lone bird still calls for his mate. Sad but true. Anne.

Some fowls and mammals mate for life. This is a very sad poem with a smooth flow of words, making for a very good read. There is very good imagery and descriptive read.

Warm, well-written, and aimed right for the heart. I loved it. It combines the innocence of an eight-year old with the harsh reality of loss. I looked for spelling, and grammar errors. I found none. Though I felt a few commas were needed after a few clauses (When I was about eight years old...), this did not interrupt the flow. Plus, as the writer, you get to decide when you want the reader to take a breath. Of course, the strength of this submission is the last line. In Missouri, we learn that a cardinal outside your house means that someone in Heaven is thinking about you.

Oh, how beautiful and sad at the same time. I'm amazed at how many creatures, unlike us humans, have the moral fibre to mate for life. The big cats do that too, and I've read of a number of sea creatures who also mate for life.

Thanks for this lovely story. Good luck with the contest.

he seemed to be looking down at something on (the) road and was very still.

Wonderful story, well written with a little build up to a great ending. I have never seen a Cardinal except in a baseball uniform. Keep writing.

I have quite a few cardinals in my backyard here on Cape Cod. Your story is touching, it is so sad to see a cardinal grieve. These beautiful birds are such a joy to watch and your story enters the heart.

Wow. That brought tears to my eyes. I'm such an animal lover. I can sense your excitement for riding a bike by yourself. And what a sadness that came over you when you saw the cardinal. It's a sad memory told with great feeling.
