Thank you, kahpot, for your sympathetic review and for feeling for my country. These attacks happen so frequently now that two weeks ago I began to write this poem about the Orlando shooting last year, but on Saturday I decided to focus on the New York truck rampage instead. Hours after I posted my poem on Sunday, a gunman killed twenty-six in a church. Given that the deadline for this poetry contest is next year, there could be dozens of attacks in the interim. Thanks for wishing my poem and my country the best.

There is just no way that I could give you any less than a six for this very moving piece. I always admire those that can write these sonnets, especially your's that moves so smoothly. Well done. Don.

Oh, thank you, Don, for your generous, six star review.

I began this poem two weeks ago when I wanted to emulate the style of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales or the Pearl Poet's Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, but after five pages of drafts and restarts I could not make the poem work.

I broke away from my laptop and went on a walk. The idea came to me that the poem could work as a sonnet. I began to walk slower and slower as I typed the first lines into my iPhone. By the time I arrived home, I had a first stanza which I later discarded in the evening when I decided to focus on the recent New York truck rampage. I posted my poem hours before the Texas church shooting.

Thanks again for your review and support. I appreciate it.

It's a sad world right now, my friend! We just had a church shooting in Texas, in the least likely of places.

What do we do? You bring it up in your lovely poem. Do we hide away, resume life, try to be detached?

I'm sorry you were personally effected with your entry to the competition. It is a sad state of affairs!

Take care,
Rhonda

Rhonda, I do not know thee answer. Two weeks ago I began to write a poem about last year's Orlando shoot, but on Saturday I decided to write about the New York truck rampage instead. Several hours after I posted my poem on Sunday, a gunman killed twenty-six at a Texas church. The deadline for this poetry contest is March 5. How many more attacks will occur between now and then?

    Thank you for your review.

Let's hope none! Unfortunately, the world has gone wacko on us. I live in Texas, and was born in San Antonio, where the shooting occurred. That's too close to home, my friend.

These attacks are horrific. But it does seem to be true that they pass from the collective consciousness because they make people feel angry, or mournful, or afraid--and they can't work through the discomfort to resolution and action. They jump over the conflict back to normalcy--until the next time it happens. Thank you for sharing such a powerful poem. --Roseanne

Yes, Roseanne, these attacks are happening so frequently now that returning to any semblance of normal is challenging. Two weeks ago I began writing a poem about last year's Orlando shooting but on Saturday I decided to focus on the New York truck rampage instead. Several hours after I posted my poem Sunday, a gunman killed twenty-six in a church. The sonnet contest deadline is March 5. How many attacks will happen in the interim?

Thank you for your review and for calling this a powerful poem.

Liked your poem, it sums up the horror that we all have to live very well.
Great rhyme, good content and well written.
Very worthy of its all time best status.

In my opinion, a stunningly relevant piece, unfortunately, but singularly and outstandingly expressive in well constructed dynamic, in easy and fluid rhyme - superb. Best of luck in the contest...

This is a powerful and thought provoking write. The courage of the victims of terrorist is inspiring but everybody has a limit.

Even since you penned this another atrocity has occurred in Texas. Soon we will be confined to our homes as evil roams the streets

hugs

Freda

Yes, Freda, when I was writing this on Saturday I decided to mention the New York truck rampage. Several hours after I posted my poem Sunday, a gunman killed twenty-six in Texas church. The sonnet contest is March 5. How many attacks will happen between now and then?

Thank you for your generous, six star review and virtual hug. I need it.

Very touching SonneSonnet. We can't read about or listen to the news without being touched by terrorist, or gang shootings, or disgruntled lovers or just plain of idiots. It happens so often anymore that these situations seem to be the norm these days. A sad state of life for our world today. Good luck in the contest.

Sorry I can only give you a virtual six as I have none left. The photo speaks for itself. Your poem is a perfect Sonnet, rhymes, the twist halfway in the third stanza, and an excellent concluding couplet. Best wishes for the contest.
