What a merry-go-round! How maddening to step out to pee and miss the doctor's call. Something similar happened to me and I started to scream and cry and tell the receptionist to go fuck herself. The doctor, alarmed, at the noise, opened the entry door and let me. The squeaky or screaming wheel gets the oil.

Was your husband out of town that he could not care of the dog?

Where I live we have Urgent Care buildings where you just walk in, but there can be a long wait depending on how many others are there.
Now the emergency room in hospitals are packed. You can come in bleeding and still have to wait!

BTW, I've heard that eating apples can help a migraine if you catch it early.

Hi, Shari. My husband, a vet, works in industry these days. I have been urging him to open an account with a veterinary supplier but it seems to be a long drawn out process.
It is frustrating to have to see another vet!

If you're not fussy about which vet or which dentist et cetera you could get seen immediately. My particular dentist would make you wait at least some weeks, (not three months,) and as far as vets go you just turn up and the vet will see you as a rule I think. It's all about our government's priorities in some instances, and as for real estate things have changed so much since we bought our house. If you are renting I believe you do have do make application and those applications are then viewed by the landlord and he decides who he wants. Buying a house I think is all about supply and demand. It's still such a beautiful country, NZ. Giddy

Yes, NZ is a lovely country. We do enjoy living here. Hopefully, I'll never get so sick again.

Sorry to hear about the lack medical treatment there. In the USA that never would have happened. I can see a specialist and/or have a test within weeks, days if it's really bad. Obamacare has almost ruined this great care since prices have more than doubled, but at least good medical care, for people and for pets, is readily available.

Oh, Phyllis, it shouldn't be like this.
To be honest, I'm still feeling very upset and humiliated about it all but there's nothing I can do. I hope it doesn't happen again.
Thank the Lord my headache abated.

You should move to the US.

My husband looked there years ago and didn't like it. Too big. Small people have little chance without family support.

Depends upon the state you choose. Each state has its own laws and features. Tax rates differ. You can look it up online. Southern states seem to be cheapest. Illinois, where I live, is not the best choice. California is ridiculous and too expensive. Research on the web would help. I am not happy with what Obama did to us for eight years, but Trump is undoing the damage and things are getting better again. :)

Here is a way to start searching. Found on web:

Image result for cheapest states to live in. Price data based on the 2016 Annual Average Cost of Living Index by the Council for Community and Economic Research, C2ER.

KENTUCKY. Time to live it up!
    TEXAS
    KANSAS
    TENNESSEE
    IDAHO
    OKLAHOMA
    ARKANSAS
    MICHIGAN

According to the analysis, the top 10 best states for health care are:

    Hawaii
    Iowa
    Minnesota
    New Hampshire
    District of Columbia
    Connecticut
    South Dakota
    Vermont
    Massachusetts
    Rhode Island

The 10 worst states for health care include:

    Louisiana
    Mississippi
    Alaska
    Arkansas
    North Carolina
    Georgia
    South Carolina
    Alabama
    Florida
    Nevada

These are the top states for jobs for the 12 months ending in May 2017.

    WASHINGTON (state, not DC)
    GEORGIA
    OREGON
    COLORADO
    IDAHO
    NEVADA
    FLORIDA
UTAH... The job market in the Beehive State has been in an absolute sweet spot, with perhaps the most vibrant tech scene in the nation.

Amazing! Thanks for sending that, Phyllis. I don't think I have the stamina to move again. Although Mexico and Malaysia are beginning to look like retirement possibilities where our money would go further. A move to the states would set us backwards again. We have to consider exchange rates.
reply by Phyllis Stewart on 12-Oct-2017
I have two friends who moved to Mexico to live cheaper and they love it. Medical care is fast with many choices. Money goes further. Ordering things on the web is next to impossible. The govt is corrupt and can't be trusted, but that's everywhere. :)

Malaysia is a good choice, if you don't mind being surrounded by a different language. Feral/Fez/Walu lives there. You might ask his opinion.

Yep, in my opinion, it's a First World problem, somehow tied to socialism style care. Old doctors quit because they don't like having insurance companies tell them how to treat their patients. Then the newly outa school drs haven't enough experience it seems.
I've had exactly the same dental office problems here and too often, medically also. Getting past a secretary isn't easy. You only see a real doctor about 1-2 times/year; otherwise you get nurse practitioners who actually are 'almost' doctors and are pretty good. Usually more sensitive too.
The alternative is to go to an ER if you really can't bear it anymore; but you can wait for 6-8+hours. Obviously bleeders, vomiters, broken bones get first priority...

So yep, you are now part of the First World System...sorry... and good luck!
PS) hopefully you never have to get a new dr once you have one assigned, whether you dislike him or he quits...it will definitely take 6 months to get an appointment to meet him. Then if you have to change insurance (in my case, the insurance company went outa business, believe it or not, causing all kinds of confusions in catch-up care that I still haven't managed in 1 1/2 years!) OUCH!
Yay for social 'care'.

It doesn't have to be this way--it's so sad.
Many Third World countries have better health care and nobody wants to admit it.

I believe it. They probably aren't tied up with the insurance companies either, right? That's what has screwed everything up here. They control every level. Follow the money...

I haven't heard of it here Nicole, although there is much bureaucracy in government circles. But the medical and related professions, plus vets, are pretty flexible, I've not experienced any difficulties, perhaps it's a New Zealand thing, certainly from your real estate experience. I found that most bizarre well done, PS people could die, not to mention animals. Well done, blessings, Roy

Many countries are experiencing similar medical problems. I know England is a bad place to get ill since it often takes months to get an appointment to see a doctor. Canada is the same. In the US, they are having problems but the patient's answer is to go to the emergency room for something as simple as the common cold. I've never heard of a store not being able to sell alcohol because of a licensing issue. I have hard of bars being closed down for not having the proper license. I found this very interesting and although I have always wanted to visit New Zealand, I don't think I would like living there.

On the whole, it is a nice place to live, but it does have some difficulties. Do you manage to see a doctor easily in Mexico or not?
    Nicole
reply by Sasha on 11-Oct-2017
Seeing a doctor is one of the easiest and fastest things you can do here. You don't even need an appointment. They usually start seeing patients around 10:00 after they have done rounds at the hospital. Stay open until 2 or 3 and return again around 5 to see the patients that couldn't get time of from work. They are usually open until 8.

Yeah this confirms what I said in your other story you are going through about your move from Africa. I feel like it is a lot the same here in Australia. Welcome to the Modern world.

A very well-written chapter. A new country has new rules and new regulations to get accustomed to. It can be frustrating when things are so much different than we are coming from.

Hi, Nicole

= OMGoodness!!! I'd have been mad on top mad, and of course, it wouldn't have made a bit of difference. Unbelievable to have to wait so long.
= Is it just doctors don't like coming there? Insurance doesn't pay well?
= Jeesh, I'm gobsmacked. Just doesn't seem like things like that should be happening these days. I sure do feel for you.
= If we would have had to shut our bar down and not be able to sell liquor, it would have put a dent in the pocket in no time at all.
= I can truthfully say I have never seen such a sign.

Cheers, J (*<*)

Thanks, Jax. Perhaps many doctors head over to Australia for bigger pay but the cost of living in cities there is high.

Hmm. It seems to be a bureaucratic problem. Do they not have enough medical personnel? We often cannot see a doctor the same day but if it's serious, there is always Emergency Room services. Still those can involve long waits while waiting to be treated and being exposed to all the really sick people there.

So sorry to hear about your horrendous migraine experience! I can understand your decision to go abroad for medical treatment. Perhaps Korea might be an option, too.

As for the picture, I had to smile at that one. It sounded like such a small town problem. Speaking of which, there are many places in the SE and a few other counties which are "dry" in other words, no alcohol can be purchased there at all.
