The picture here would seem to be of a public dance hall, the sort of place where it is possible to meet new people and be quite intimate both in physical propinquity and in conversation. Some who go to these places are mildly curious while to others it may be a lifeline. That the girl's face is completely invisible in the photo, against a dark curtained background actually speaks volumes and is a splendid adjunct to this free verse poem about lonliness.

A very well-written poem about loneliness. Sometimes it become hard to be alone all the time and we seek someone that can give us some companionship for a while.

You are so right, Sandra. Loneliness is a very sad condition. Sometimes a person can feel that way even in a crowd. This poem was inspired by a song of long ago I heard on Pandora. It brought me back to the time I was divorced from my first husband (high school sweetheart) at 25. A very sad and lonely time in my life. Our last song we ever danced to was "Silver Wings" by Merle Haggard. He died of a sudden heart attack five years ago (never remarried). He was a sad man. I, however, met my present husband in a dance hall and we have been happily married 43 years now. So, it ends well. :o)

JJ,
I have felt this way before. I can remember it distinctly. As a matter of fact, I had to fight off making some really poor decisions BECAUSE of feeling this way. *smile* It's hard being a lonely girl sometimes, eh? A powerful and vivid poem. Good luck in the contest, my friend! Well done.

Robyn, thank you for reading and commenting on my poem. I think we all at one time or another have felt the intense feelings of loneliness. My weakest time was when I was divorced at 25 from my high school sweetheart. Dreams shattered, love lost, a home wrecked. I was one of those women looking probably in all "the wrong places for love." I did find it, however, in an old Texas dance hall. I've been married to the true love of my life now for 43 years. So, it does end well. A song the other day inspired this poem. It made me think of that time when I was so hurt and lonely.

Thank you, Debbie, for reading and commenting on my poem. Yes, this poem was inspired by a song "Silver Wings" by Merle Haggard. It was the last song my deceased first husband and I ever danced to. We divorced when I was 25 and he 29. He died at 63 with never re-marrying. He was a very sad man. I met my present husband while looking for acceptance and companionship in an old Texas dance hall. We have been happily married 43 years. It did end well.
