That was an amazing story, and I expect there are many more who survived those days and can tell equally harrowing stories. It was a terrible time, and I only know of them through history books and people like you who tell the story. This was an excellent portrayal of Fate, and a brilliant contest entry. this phrase "shook Lenin's hand. You may not think of it too much" as "too much of it"
This is a sad but uplifting story and the "fate" part of the concept is the most closely aligned to actual "fate" that I've read so far. Good Luck in the Contest.

Very well written with a reminder that we are all part of those that came before us. Like many others, I too, come from a set of ancestors who left all they had to change the destiny of their descendants.

This is quite a story. I was completely fascinated by it. I am a firm believer in fate and how our lives are etched out for us and we meet who we meet because we are meant to.
I love the ending, the woman becoming your maternal grandmother.

A fascinating glimpse of history through the eyes of your family and its effect upon your own life subsequently.
From a reader's point of view, perhaps it is the personal angle that is more gripping than the plain cold facts of history.
A paragraph like the one below would make an excellent 'hook' into this story, to galvanise the attention right from the outset:
"One night with only the clothes on their backs, he and his family left their lives of abundance, love, and happiness to run away from Stalin's idiotic behavior while trying hard not to fall in Hitler's ring of fire, on the other side of the conflict. "

How full of surprises is life? How rich one can be with only a change of clothes--alive only because of the warm hearts and kindness of strangers?
Wow, what a profound statement that is, and how true. I enjoyed reading your story and it is amazing how life twists and turns and brings the most unexpected conclusions. I've often wondered how life would change here in the United States if we experienced what people in Europe did during WW2.
I didn't see any errors or edits needed.

To make matters worse, all that cruelty and hardship was heightened by cold winters. To be poor and cold and have a war--it hardly gets worse than that. Your family were fortunate to have survived. According to a documentary I saw, Starlin killed 20 million of his own people by allowing them to starve.
