Humans can find things to get upset about as easily as a fly can locate a place to land. This is very moving and certainly something many should consider. I enjoyed your thoughts and ideas. I agree, after all, they are lifeless and stand as reminders of our mistakes as well as our rights.

Yep, because, otherwise, where will it end? Destroy Mount Rushmore? Get rid of our money which bear these images? Naw, they won't be happy til America is 100% destroyed, because it's not about the flag, the statues. It's about hate. Blessings...

Here is an idea to play with
Monuments should remain
Showing history has passed
Yet with New Monuments to grow
Do not destroy but construct
New Monuments beside the old
Showing the growth of US History
With minds that coincide in decency ...
A monumental write, pardon the pun. I completely agree and think this is an amazing and valid poem. Kind regards Meia x

You are right Dan. Good job expressing our thoughts with your well chosen rhymed poetry.

Those monuments should stand for what they are--a historical accounting. Then new ones could be next to them as you wrote.

Those who tied ropes to one & pulled it down should be arrested for destroying gov't property.

Violence breeds violence.

Thanks for sharing. Jan

You know if they would build a new one to go along side the old one I could go with that because of our history. But the trouble comes when it comes time to build and they say they out of money sorry. So we are left with these nut on the far right who could care less if they up or down it just gives the right beat some heads in. I see the hat you wear were you part of the 1st Cav.?

Thanks for the comments. I was stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado Springs a medical corpsman. The hat is not from my time in service but at the Veterans Hospital where I work I get the same response.
As far as your comment of the far right the same is for the far left. Both are extremist who do not use reason but only violence.

Hi Dan. I agree that we should not destroy history or rewrite it. We need to remember it and, in fact, teach it to kids in school. I'll bet most American kids don't know their own country's history. How can they make good choices when they don't know the past? Everybody is offended about something these days, but we all agree that we can't erase what happened before. You have addressed an important topic well. BTW, the person who gave you one star has been a member since 2015 and has not written anything. There is a button you can check on your writes which eliminates non-writer reviews. In my opinion, anyone who won't put himself out there and produce work to be reviewed shouldn't have the honor or rating anyone else's work. Marilyn

Thanks for the comments. There is only one who wrote poor reviews to both poems. Mostly I thought it because they do not know the resent events. Still it does not really matter because they re3move the lowest reviews.

I think this idea is a good idea. I put down some notes in my review of your other poem. One thing I forgot to mention is that nobody seems to be remembering that Lincoln pardoned the confederates. If they agreed to lay down arms, they were welcomed back as citizens of the United States. It was perhaps, his finest hour, and something we have to remember as a country. estory

Thanks for the comments. They also forget that the Civil War was not fought to free the slaves but other maters started the war. Freeing the slaves came as part of the battle during the war but not the cause of the separation. Central to the Civil War was the matter of States Rights and freedom for many plantations being hard pressed by the industrial states. That is still a matter of discussion today. Many of the South fought not because of slavery but because of the preservation of their values and livelihood. So few know history and therefore are easily led by extremist.

These college kids should learn history, spend two years in the army, and learn to appreciate what they have in this country. But instead they are fed a bunch of garbage by socialist politburo wanna bees that pose as college professors. And the scary thing is, the government doesn't seem to want to get involved. They are all worried about their corporate sponsors, estory

History? The winners declare the history. Monuments are tributes to some, milestones to others. Lee was the main man and bridged a chasm between old ways and new ways, a reminder of the change to both sides...Pretend there was never a Hell, and you may find one waiting. Excellent thoughts and poem.

Thanks for the comments. Very true. Many do not know that Lee was against slavery and only because he was from a State that seceded did he join the South. He was a true soldier and very human but now bellied by fools who lack courage to know history.

I think this was a magnificent tribute-appeal - or appeal-tribute - to what is going on in your country, especially since the beginning of the year. I feel that monuments have their place in our lives - good and bad.
The bad memories remind us and warn us;
the good memories also remind us and encourage us.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts in this poem.

What an inspiration. Your poem really gets at the root of political wrongs and offers a gentle suggestion on how to improve such wrongs. I found it refreshing. So much complaining these days without a realistic comment on corrective actions. Thank you for your "Idea to play with". Love it!
