Loved this - Bernie sensed there was something different with Howie not being around.... and he was right - but his soul mate would be coming home tomorrow.

I do believe dogs understand more than we credit them for - and know for a fact, they feel our emotions - my little Cairn terrier used to sit right in front of me and stare up into my face if I was unwell or upset, and as soon as I met her eyes, she would jump up and give me a hundred kisses, which always lifted my spirits. How I miss her. She was the loveliest gift Colin ever gave me.

I so enjoy your doggie stories - thanks for making me smile, Patty.

Margaret

You are so welcome. I knew I had to post a story from Howie and Bernie when you asked, pleeeeeeeeeease. They are my favorite stories to write, but I do not want to flood the board with them - which is what I would do if left to my own devices.
Thank you for being a constant reader,

Hi Jill; I was very relieved it was only a hernia. They weren't absolutely sure until they went in - they couldn't tell from the x-ray whether it was just that or maybe a tumor. It was a long few days,

As usual, I can never find anything to criticize with your pet stories, LOL. You had me worried for a minute. I thought Howie had passed away. Thank heavens it wasn't anything tragic.

Hi there; no, Howie is very much alive and doing well. He hates the 'cone of shame,' but he is managing. Thank you for the nice review,

Hello, again,

I really liked the first paragraph and this sentence: A pencil was stuck through her hair and Bernie thought it looked cute, though he really wanted to chew on the eraser.

Thought I found a typo, but, no, I didn't. :P

Have a good weekend, Patty, and I'm really glad that your dog was okay!

Good morning, Patty

I like the way you're able to get inside of Bernie's head. Dogs will miss their companions and it can affect their behavior which you captured quite well. Enjoyed.

Take care and stay safe,

Ray

I think this is a terrific scene where the dog has to piece things together about his friend. Thanks for letting us in on the malady that was actually being addressed. Fun story.

Hello Patty,

This is another great "Howie and Bernie" story and I read it worried that this would be something more serious. Yet I was so relieved to know that Howie would be okay and returning home the next day.

I kept wondering with Bernie, 'Where was Howie?"

You really know to keep your readers intrigued all through out your stories. This writing is priceless and a joy to read. Thank you for another great piece.

Hi Tier; yes, Howie is doing well, and Bernie is thrilled that he's back home. It is funny to watch Bernie look at Howie with his cone. I can almost see him trying to figure out why he's wearing it,

You do a great job telling the story through the eyes of Bernie. Excellent and consistent POV. Our pets can be a great concern when they do not feel well. They tell us in so many ways when they need help, but we have to be paying attention. I am so glad to hear it turned out okay and the buddies will be together again.

Great story! I liked that the narration came from Bernie's point of view, it added another layer to the story. Interesting how dogs see what we take for granted. It took me a minute to realize "the small black thing" was a cellphone. Technically though, aren't dogs color blind? If they are, I don't think they would be able to describe something as a "blue thing" or "black thing" since they really don't know what colors are. I am glad Howie is okay. It is always a relief to know your furbabies are ok.

Bernie is so cute. Your posts are making me want a pet. But I haven't quite gotten over my cat's death. I like the details that Bernie notes about Howie's changes and how his absence affects him.
