This is an excellent poem. Whether a loved one is lost due to death or due to divorce or separation, it still is a shock and a painful experience to go through.

What I love most about your poem is that you leave it up to the reader's interpretation as to whether it was death or divorce that caused the loss. You state simply ... "And then he left". Yes, just looking at a wedding band can bring back a flood of memories.

Well done! ~~ Connie

This poem, Band of Gold, is a terriffic encapsulation of a blessed marriage that, like all good things, came to an end. Like the man said: It's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.

This is a very well written free verse poem. You used very good descriptive wording and I like the art work you chose to go with your words. I am so sorry about your first marriage and husband. Best wishes in the contest. Teri

You've written a great poem.
I especially like how the first two lines and the last two lines come together.
Great artwork. The image shown supports the poem. The background goes well with the art and color of font chosen.
Best of luck to you in the contest.
Thanks for sharing your Free Verse.
Good luck with your future writing.

This is lovely. Some marriages are like that. For some, once is enough, for others there is no replacement. These are good lines:
"And now, what remains
Are letters and memories,
Unspoken words and silent tears.
And you...his token of love,"
I read this to mean that you (the living spouse) was the token of love that remained--then I realized it was the wedding ring.

I like your approach to free verse - your word speaking
of love won and love lost - rather a sad ending.
A good entry for the contest.
good luck

First and foremost, Anonymous Poet, I am deeply sorry for your loss.
My marriage of nearly 22 years ended rather abruptly as well, although my wife simply decided she'd had enough of being married, especially to me.

Whether we lose our spouse to the cold, cruel clutches of death, or they simply decide to walk out of our lives for good one day, it rips a hole in the very fabric of "US" and who we are.
Neither the very best tailors nor seamstresses can repair that tear well enough, for just as with any fabric, the evidence there was once a rip will always remain.

    Thank you very much Dean,
Yes, it left me broken...cancer is a cruel beast...and I still think of him everyday.

I'm also, sorry for your loss, my best friend had the same experience as you and she grieved just as much as I did.
In some way, it's worse for you. She used to say 'yours ended sad, mine ended bad but you had his love until he took his last breath, no one can take that away from you, I just had pain at watching him leave loving someone else'

I thank you for your kind words and I wish you much happiness as you go forward.
(My friend and I both remarried eventually and are both in a better place now)
    All the best : )

A very well-written free verse poem. When we make our vows with that band of gold we make it with pure hearts and we don't know what lies ahead. We do the best we can while it lasts.
