Hi Kim. Well if that statue is a good likeness of Rupert, then he was indeed a handsome young man. What a shame to have his life cut so short by an infected mosquitoe bite.

Great Acrostric poem, Kim! "Ephemerality defined" ... no kidding. He died at such a young age. I enjoyed reading both your poem and your extensive author notes about Rupert and his poetry. You did a lot of research. Thank you for sharing it all with us. - - Connie

Hi Connie!

He really was a handsome young man. There are a few pictures if you follow the link to his Wikipedia bio. He did die too young, but perhaps it was a kinder fate than if he'd made it to Gallipoli with the rest of his shipmates. Thank you for the awesome comments.

Some would undoubtedly say that compared to the fate that befell those who made it to Gallipoli, he got off lightly. I think that you expressed your feelings splendidly in this poem. Some would say that war is human nature and this could be true. I think that war is horrible. Your poem made me think of the many bad things that are happening in our world today, unrelentingly. I hope that one day we can all live in a peaceful world.

I'm a little confused about it being listed as an acrostic, but I dont know much about poetry, so I will just say that it was interesting and thanks for the author's notes to give the background. Thought these closing lines were awesome.

His grave, on Skyros dug,
kept 'neath the trees where tended olives grew;
escaped Gallipoli's atrocities of war.

Hi Janilou:

An acrostic spells out words with the first letter in each line. Generally those words are the title. In this case, if you look at the first letter in each line you will see that they spell Rupert Brooke. I lead with his quote, which is why I called it a 'Quotable Acrostic.' Thanks for taking the time to read and review. I appreciated you saying which lines were your favorite.

Thank you for all the kind comments. I also used Brooke's rhyme scheme from the second stanza of The Soldier. I just discovered Rupert Brooke this week. He really was an excellent poet. So sad that he died so young due to the war.
