This haiku, Scotch Thistle, uses its fourteen syllables to compare, perhaps the good-looking thistle to the prickly Scotsman. Fun poem.

I know the thistle is a weed and prickly but I love it and my goldfinches love the seeds.
This is a striking picture of the thistle and I enjoyed reading your haiku.
I'm always pleased when I learn a new word. Not sure that it will come up in daily conversation but if I hear it again I will know what it means. Thank you.

Well done.
Blessings
Janet

Hi Janet Thanks for readng my Haiku and yes the Scotch thistle is pretty but very prickly best left on the stem They always remind me of my childhood as they grew wild on our farm in Victoria Australia. and I also like the Scottish heritage with the kilts sporrans and bagpipes so I had a bit of fun with this Haiku Cheers Christine😃

Despite dissimilarity, here the poet tells how both thistle and Sporran existence have made the order of beauty have been referred to their co-existence in rhyme; I enjoyed the read.

Now don't ask me why this is but the Scottish or Scots people I know get very upset when the word Scotch is used as as an adjective except in the case of Scotch whisky, often abbreviated to "Scotch". the correct abbreviated form of Scottish these days is Scots. At least if yuo do change it, and you should really, it won't affect the syllable count of your haiku.

Hi Jim, Thanks for your read and review. It seems a bit of a bone of contention the use of Scotch when associated with Scottish things , however as my notes said This thistle is Known as the Scotch thistle here in Australia and growing up in Victoria Australia this thistle grew wild on my Farm. And it is interesting that the Scottish national flower is this type of thistle and there are many articles about this thistle online. It seems this Scotch thistle has many names
Scotch, Scottish Wooly. etc and it is very similar to the national flower of Scotland and I couldn't resist the connection of the thistle and Sporran just a bit of fun really . Cheers Christine😃

thank you for sharing your haiku about weeds with us. The picture shows the nasty spikes on the leaves of the weeds, and reminds me of the time I spent weeding my grandmother's garden. In just a few lines, you describe the weed, but I'm not sure why you pointed out that it was NOT a sporran. Was this supposed to be the satori?

Hi Patty, Thanls for your review and this thistle is often engraved on the Scotsmans sporran as it is very similar to the Scottish emblem which is a thistle and also known as the wooly thistle and many sporrans are made of course hair like wool(as per my autors notes) So this was my attempt at connecting the two together as a bit of fun so the Satori was meant to be as is. Have a look at some pics on google of both the Scotch thistle and the spooran and you may see how I have come up with this Cheers Christine😃

Hi Chrissy:

I think you did a great job on your Scottish Haiku. Is that a conundrum in terms? lol I even knew what a sporran was... as I'm completely hooked on Outlander; the books, the mini series, and not just because of the hunky Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) However, he was the first to come to mind when I saw the word sporran. I think that must be conditioning lol

Great job on the s and p consonance in your haiku. Thank you for sharing.

Kim

Chrissy,

This is a striking and unusual poem. The image is cool and I like the choice of font to go with it. You know how I feel about capitalization in haiku, so, of course, I'm wishing you had minimalized that. *smile* I also noticed the following nit in your notes:

1.) The sporran is (worn) on a leather strap or chain

Thanks for sharing!

OK I have changed the capitals back to lower case ( although on the list from Gypsy classes you can use Capital however a couple of other have pointed out this is not the done thing so I will comply with majority LOL also glad ypu picked up warm/ worn .Great to hear from and pleased you thought this unusual ( like me Ha Ha ) Cheers Christine😃😀

-I love the image.
-Author notes appreciated.
-Syllable count is good.
-Effective, colorful imagery
to describe the thistle.
-A clever satori, Christine,
that ties the haiku into the title.
-Thanks for sharing.

Hi Pam Thanks for your feedback I had a bit of fun with this one but I do love the Scotch thistle we had them all around my Dads farm so it always brings back memories. and although the Scotsmans kilt may have had a thistle emblem I doubt it was worn LOL Cheers Christine😃👍

This is a fine haiku
with very purple imagery in the the prickly, colorful thistle
and good grammatical connection
a fine satori line - I think the thistle
would be very "uncomfortable" in that position
On suggestion; no caps on "ornate" and "not"
Excellent presentation, too
Well done

Very nice, being Scottish myself and lived in Scotland all my life, I am unable to understand why our national flower is actually a weed. Your description of the thistle and sporran are spot on. The colours in the picture are quite vivid too. Good luck in the contest.
Best wishes.
