I do agree. It's a great country.
I guess all countries make mistakes and with great power comes great responsibility... which makes things more difficult.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank heavens you have the grit to stand up and write the truth about the misgivings of America. Too many mistakes through greed, war and arrogance. Tall poppies will be cut down. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on your country.

I really enjoyed reading this wonderfully crafted poem,
merging the songs, the good with the bad. As you say we all make mistakes and have to mend those to the best of our ability.
Great job
God bless

Exceptional writing. I really enjoyed this exceptionally well-written poem.
I am partial to the second stanza, I'm very tired of the whiners who think
Americans owe them something.

-I appreciate the notes, jaybird.
-A well written poem with
effective rhyme, and many
good, historical examples.
-You contrast the good
and the bad very well
in each stanza.
-We are a great country, and
I think many of us are proud
of it, but like many countries,
there are those things that
did not make us proud.
-Our job in the present
is to make things as good as we can.
-Thanks for sharing.

Oh, my. I was a little surprised by the negative tone of the poem until I reached that last line, "God mend thy every flaw." For we have done (and continue to do) a goodly number of less than commendable things. As proud as we both of our country.

Yes, America has made a lot of big, ugly mistakes. I often wonder what our grandchildren will learn about our current "foreign policy" and war mongering. The world, not just America, is going to hades. Great job on the poem, though!

Hello jaybird1
You, indeed did a wonderful writing of what we are sinning for to remind us how proud we are for what a great country
(the USA) is to have freedom.

I admired the way you combined lines from our patriotic songs to create this tribute in rhymed quatrains. Yes, we have a good deal for which to be proud, but we must also make up for many mistakes. Sighs- Joan

That is great! Some of it controversial I would think though, as you say, we have made mistakes along the way. But, I think from some of those mistakes we made, I'd like to think that we learned something. But no matter what is done, we are certainly not above making more. I'm not sure from what is going on in our capital now, there have made one big laughing stock of our government which they did and are doing right now by pushing Trump back at every turn. We
won't ever know if Trump is or was not a good president because they've stopped or knocked him down in everything he tried to do. I hold the democrats for putting us where we are now. Obama became president and we all rallied behind him. Those of us who didn't want Obama, there we shut our mouths and he was our president. Trump was voted in and they've tried ever since then to impeach him, and run him out of office! I'm ashamed that our own people can act like spoiled children. Sorry for the rant. You're poem is great!!
