The only mermaid story I know is the Hans Christian Anderson story immortalized in a statue. Thanks for sharing the Tennyson poem. Your mermaid wants to be Lord Tennyson's mermaid and she's immortalized again in your verses.

    Hi lyenochka,

I have long admired the painting by Waterhouse. When I read the poem by Tennyson, I just knew it had to become my wish Lauranelle. Thanks for the great comments and for taking the time to read and review.

I use to love Mermaids until having found out they truly exist. There's that movie with Darryl Hannah and Steve Martin. And 'Mermaids' with Cher. Delightful... Like your poem, which is so very well penned. Fantastic work. Goodnight.

If you were someone's mermaid (even Tennyson's), how would you dance? Yet another great tribute poem from you, Kim. The rhyme is perfect - didn't even have to make allowance for those odd pronunciations ;-)

Well done, Craig

    Hi Craig,

You are right, how would I dance... water ballet, perhaps? lol Thank you for this fun, fantastic review! I keep telling you I don't have an accent ;)

This is beautifully done. It is more melancholy than fanciful (as the Mermaid). I enjoy the power of the contrast that enters in the final 2 stanzas; the truth of mortality and the effect of age which this wish is made to defy...
"my combs have slipped and chipped; tarnished by clay." - beautifully rendered.
Thanks for writing this.

Kim, this is an outstanding poem. Very well written. Waterhouse's works have such romanticism about them. A fine accompaniment to your fine poem. Marilyn

    Hi Marilyn:

My mom has a copy of this painting in her home and I have always loved it. His artwork is magnificent. Thank you for the wonderful comments. Many days I wish I was a mermaid lol I love the water, though, up here, I'd likely freeze.

My daughter had two prints in her home by Waterhouse. Stunning. I do expect you would freeze up there if you were a mermaid. Does it ever get warm enough to swim?

It does, generally mid June to mid August (unless it has turned rainy by then)
