Thank you Kim for sharing your lovely, thoughtful piece and the other two that are equally provoking. We all have a bit of the Ostrich in us don't we. That feeling of helplessness turned to numb turned to just turn away? Much to ponder this morning and you have set me on that path. Thank you. BTW Love the Villanelle form and will have to try one of those too before we come to the end of the thirty.

Hi Wendy,
I love Villanelles. Have you ever been to www.shadowpoetry.com? Check that out and look under poetry types. There are tons of styles to try. I really enjoy exploring different styles. I think that it has become a little bit of self preservation to fend for ourselves these days. However, in this day and age people aren't even talking face to face anymore. Most just hid behind their screens, whether they are computers, tablets, or most likely, their smart phones.
When I've written something that makes people ponder that makes me happy. Thank you for the excellent review.

Technology has taken over. I often wonder what society will be like twenty of fifty years from now. Will all social skills be gone. As technology advances, people are spending more and more time by themselves and not interacting face-to-face. "DE-sensitivity" ... yes, we are all becoming desensitized to all the horrible things that are going on in the world. I also think that there will always be wars. We just don't seem to learn from past mistakes.

You are absolutely correct. I'm glad that you related so well to this piece. Auden had never been more than a cursory acquaintance that I knew from afar. In reading him today, he became like a friend, more of a kindred spirit the more I read. Your appreciation of this selection is the icing on the cake. :)

One of the joys of reviewing here is being reintroduced to famous poems of the past. What a wonderful villanelle that is by W H Auden - and it just goes to show, as yours does too, that rules are there to be bent!
I very much like the cadence of "Oblivious am I? Could I the ploughman be?" and it works beautifully as a repeating line. My only quibble is that the meaning is rather deeply embedded in the accompanying picture and your author notes. Without either of these, with the poem standing alone in its own right, I wonder what sense would be made of it.
The painting is a powerful visual representation of the single-mindedness, one might almost say the narrow-mindedness of the ploughman who is so closely focused on his task that he does not see the wonders going on around him, the mighty ship and seascape.
This sense of just getting on with what is important in one's own life instead of worrying about the disasters besetting the outside world is captured with precision in your poem.
I was very much struck with the emphasis of the internal rhyme coupled with the alliteration of 'd's in your final stanza:
"I fear tears cried as I've denied society
allows this dire downfall, ..."
A fine poem indeed.
