This biographical poem, a Whitney, Harry Chapin, is a good use of the form. The background was good reading as well. I remember Cats in the Cradle and Taxi.

Beautifully penned. What a wonderful and heartfelt tribute to a poet and songwriter. It seems he really effected you as a person, and you as a writer. I'm sure he touched many more lives, as well.

Thank you for sharing this hero with us!

Rhonda

Your poems are lovely, but your memories of him in the author's notes brought tears to my eyes. Best of luck in the contest!

Hi Patty I really enjoyed reading your awesome verse in praise and admiration of Harry Chapin. After having shared your author's notes, the words in your poem had even deeper meaning and were emotionally moving. What a personal joy to have sat in the front row and connected with his amazing soul. Truly lifting moments and obviously ones that have changed your life's directions.. Beautiful journey within your words Patty. thank you for the ride. happiest of smiles, from mel xxx My love of music allows me to truly connect with your feelings .. xx

This is a wonderful tribute to a special man. We need more artists passionate about using their talent to help others. He was an interesting balladeer that died too soon. What a wonderful memory you keep and how he continued to enlighten you later on. Good luck with the contest, see you at the finish line. I also wrote about a person that left a wonderful legacy. Cheers, j

You wrote, "But the affect was profound." "Effect" is the word you want here.

I adore Chapin's music, too, always have. Never got to meet him, though! How lucky you are.

Lovely tribute, beautifully presented.

-I like the image and the poem.
-I also liked Harry Chapin; I got to see
him perform in a venue in the round; I'm
so glad I did. Great musician and a person who cared.
-Your poem is heartfelt, and shows how much he meant
to you, esp. at the end:
"You let me know of my value
So I took my flight like a bird"
-Good luck in the contest.

Harry Chapin was one of the great ones
Poet, songwriter, communicator, activist for ending world hunger,
all around great guy
So many great songs, as you mentioned,
plus one called Cory's Coming
I saw him in concert at a theater in the round
He also had a wonderful bass/baritone member of his band
Unfortunately, as with many such talented people
he had a need to drive fast in his VW
A tragic loss,
but your two poems, both the Whitney and the ode, are an excellent tribute
to the man, his music and his cause
Good luck in the contest
Well done

thank you for your thoughtful review. Just for the record, Harry wasn't speeding. He had car trouble, the flashers were on and the semi that hit him couldn't stop in time

Excellent work. You really show a personal connection with Harry Chapin. I remember his "Cat's in the Cradle." Some years ago he appeared on a TV show in the afternoon. I can't remember the name of it now. That's where I remember him singing. Excellent free verse, and you do a great job of showing some of the ways in which Chapin influenced you. Best of luck in the contest. judi
