I've written on this topic before myself. Emma Lazarus was a socialist who was passionate about the plight of the European Jewish people she wished to help. She wrote a wonderful poem, however, it isn't the law of the land here. We are not bound to accept everyone who wishes to come. The immigration law specifies application, guarantee to be made by the applicant that he/she will not be a burden on social services, therefore, must have a trade or a sponsor guaranteeing a job, then comes acceptance after vetting and finally assimilation into the American way of life.

Regarding the her poem, you will find more about Emma Lazarus and the sequencing of how she was chosen to write the poem in the first place if you read about her. It's an interesting story.

Your poem is very well written and I enjoyed reading it. Marilyn

Thanks for your compliments, Marilyn! I'm glad you enjoyed the read.

Of course i know that Lazarus' poem isn't the law. I did read her story. What I found surprising, was that her work was virtually forgotten after the statue was installed, and it was rediscovered twenty years later. I also didn't know that the statue, famously a gift from France, was commissioned to promote commerce, but Lazarus' words and the imposing sight of the 'lady in the harbor' from the decks of incoming liners were primarily responsible for transforming 'her' image into the world's foremost icon of freedom.

I'm sure we disagree on Trump's views on which countries' travelers represent the greatest potential threat to our security. (People entering routinely from France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the South American countries with large Muslim communities, and others are more likely to be terrorists than the mostly widowed women, children, and elderly fleeing war-torn homelands thatTrump is obsessing on.)

I'm willing to resume our political detente, if you are, Marilyn. We know neither of us is going to convert the other, and I think we'd both prefer to write poetry. :)

    Peace,

    Don

Yes, the only reason I read this one is because I was reviewing all the posts in the contest "Short and Colorful." Otherwise I generally skip over them.

This work has reached the exceptional level

Excellent expression of current situation and how traditional values and the colours associated with them have changed. Particularly striking is the use of 'white' to represent minorities. Pertinent graphic.

I enjoyed reading this poem you have penned for the Short and Colorful writing prompt. You used very good descriptive wording and the art work went very well. Best wishes in the contest. Teri
