A very well-written haiku. The Samurai's blood covers the frigid land of winter's lament. His blood as cold as the winter snow.

There is a warrior image in this poem with red blood contrasting with winter's snowy background. The visual effect is dramatic yet the tone is matter-of-fact.

Oh, this is nice, Gypsy, and I can see our discussion Monday of "The Last Samurai" inspired you. I love the feeling of the landscspe being not only desolated by winter but by war. I can see splatters of blood on the snow. "Frigid land" also implies the samurai is a cold-blooded killer, but he is just doing his job for a fee. A fine entry in the contest. I wish you much success.
Other news, I am having fun collecting, editing and retyping my mother's haiku.

Thank you, G man. You can call this non-traditional if you want to. It's not 5/7/5 because English and Japanese are different languages. English uses syllables and Japanese use sound units called 'onji or morae'. But it is alright. I'll take nontraditional. :)

Samurai were not only well versed and trained in the art of many different forms of combat and weaponry, they also had to be trained as poets, painters and philosophers too.
If they failed any phase of their training, that was it...no second chances.
Your haiku depicts the noble death of one such warrior, or a multitude, perhaps.
The balanced 4/5/4 syllable count uses excellent word economy to maximum effect.
Your presentation is perfect.
