A very well-written twenty syllable poem. The problem is some people think they are the only ones who have the right of freedom of speech while no other may say what they need to say.

My POV exactly. Everyone has an opinion that is valid to him/her and everyone has a right to express it. The most vociferous ones are also the most violent. It seems if they cannot win people over with sugar, they would rather bop them over the head. We've seen that here in the States with the election. People were afraid to "come out of the closet" and admit they voted for our new president for fear of violence against themselves or their property. That should never happen in a free society (or anywhere).

haha this is a do as I say not as I do poem to me.

Good job on the rhymes. Your message is well expressed. The art choice is fitting.

This also reminds me of those that riot in the streets burning cars, looting, etc. all in the name of protest. The we can protest the protest.

Best wishes in the contest.

The most liberal are the most violent--an oxymoron. My term for them is "the fascist left.' Thank you, Janny, for your review. Marilyn

I agree, Marilyn.
I don't see anything wrong with protesting or conducting a demonstration peacefully, such as with the Thousand Man March, for example.
I do however think it is detrimental to your cause and asinine to burn storefronts, tip over cars, break windows, and otherwise wreak mass destruction in your very own city or town.
For heaven sake, that's their own community, so why would anyone want to destroy and trash the place where they live?
It makes absolutely no sense to me.
All my best to you in the writing prompt.
~Dean

Hi Dean. I agree. Violence doesn't accomplish anything. We must find a way to all get along and respect each others' opinions, that's the important thing. Thank you for your nice review of this piece. I was surprised to find out that I'd won third place. Marilyn

Yes, you did in fact, Marilyn.
    Congratulations!
    You are more than welcome.

I tend to prefer poems that rhyme, and somehow you managed to make this work. There was a time when sticks and stones could hurt your bones, but words couldn't hurt you. Unless it was something like a fatwa.

This poem, Safe Space, reminds us that freedom of speech has to apply to everyone, no matter what we think of what they say. A person burn the flag and have that right. I will, of course, beat his dumb ass, but that's a different right.

Hi Bill. Definitely should apply to everyone. Everyone should have the right to express themselves peacefully and without fear for themselves or doing damage to others or their property, i.e., looting, burning cars or accosting people with opposing opinions. One can't expect free speech but not tolerate it from others. I appreciate your review and comments. Thank you.

Very well written. It is a sad thing when people think freedom of speech or any other personal freedom belongs only to them
there are so many things that you think are true but cannot say because of the repercussions.
A sad situation but so true.
your poem sadly is very true
good job [as usual]

Poem flows well and makes a good point using very few words. And when peoples' minds are made up, trying to change their opinion is as hopeless as trying to communicate with a deaf person by yelling. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you, Kathleen. That is exactly my feeling, too. We all have to get along regardless of our opinions. It makes life so much more pleasant.

You're welcome. Someone once told me that the right wing and left wing are all part of the same turkey. ;-)

Wow! What a terrific saying. I never heard that one. Besides these things flip-flop back and forth--left/right/left/right. Each change keeps us balanced. We can't go too far afield in either direction.
reply by kathleenspalding on 05-Mar-2017
Yeah, if only we could move forward instead of doing the splits :-D
reply by the author on 05-Mar-2017
Well, of course, I would like things to always go my way but perhaps the 'splits' keeps the country from going too far in one direction.
reply by kathleenspalding on 05-Mar-2017
Yep. But keeping us in the past (fossil fuels, racist attitudes) denies us much needed progress.

Therein lies one of the big problems. This view is complete spin and inaccurate. However, people believe what they want and no amount of discussion changes core beliefs. The best we can hope for is to be tolerant of each others' views.

I think this is an important point to understand that others have the same right to express their thoughts as we do. You are right we are not all cut from the same pattern and that is what makes the world go round. I enjoyed the rhyme as well.

I love the artwork and the way your writing looks as though it was made to be a poster. That's creative and would make a very nice poster to hang! I like what you have said, I wish I could remind myself to do this also, breathe! Very nicely done!
