I think you are better off without her. She was a heartbreak waiting to happen. You deserve to be treated better than that. Sometimes we forget that we deserve to be treated with respect. I hope you went on to find a much better match. I'm sure you did.

I think your Dear John letter in verse is nicely done.
Your story is clear and well told within the well written poem.
It has a good rhythm and flow.

What a lovely story! So sad and moving. Did this really happen to you?
There's a novel by Nicholas Sparks about a girl who dates a soldier called Dear John.
Thanks for sharing.

Dear John letters were very commonplace in WWII and Korea. I don't know about Vietnam or more recent conflicts. I like how "John" takes leave and tries to win Ann back. That Harley sounds like he made the right move after all. Rod

I enjoyed your poem and here is my poetic reply.

Unrequited love is really be hard
and you must move on with life
do what a sensible man would do
Buy a Harley and look for a wife
and with the old girlfriend
bid her a final final goodbye
Get on the Harley with the wife
and find for yourself
a brand new life.

All love does not mature at a marriage, expectation fails, in love sometime we say this like 'love's labour lost' or someone may call is betrayal; poet puts before several questions before the readers - is it luck or fate or lot or fortune or life? well said, well done. Keep Writing Inspire Changing! -- DR ALCREATOR

Jay, I'm sure this would have been a hard thing anytime, but especially when you're away from home. I like.the next to the last.verse .

Hi Jaybird - you are not the first to receive a 'Dear John' letter. But, if separation does not stand the test of time then the love was not meant to be. Well written, and I love that you bought a Harley-Davidson. Hope that did not let you down LOL. Heart-breaking at the time but you seem to have recovered. A good biographical poem. Thanks for posting - warm regards Dorothy

This is a great recounting of the events that led up to you leaving for the Air Force. It is sad to think that you & Ann were not able to sustain your relationship. But it is even sadder that she sent you that Dear John letter.
Your words flow well with great rhymes, too.
Good job & thanks for sharing. Jan
