Father and the horses arrived at the house with blood dripping from numerous cuts and scratches. My mother called him the bloody plowman and the name stuck forever....wow, I am amazed at your ingenuity and the story, I am so glad your father survived as he could have easily been killed, well done this to me is a deserving winner as it is so out of the box, well done and good luck much enjoyed kind regards Meia :)

Thank you. I was amazed when I found an apple with the same name as my dad's nickname. Who would have ever guessed? He was lucky that day. Scared horses are nothing one wants to deal with.

It links your story so well with the apple! Amazing entry :) x

The story about your father fits the contest. The story flows well. Being stung by bees would have been no fun for either horses or your father. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you. I can't imagine what it must have been like. Trying to calm those horses with bees after them must have been something else. The team in the picture is the one he was driving that day.

Thank you for reading and commenting. It must have been tough for my dad that day. He carried the nickname forever.

Thanks for sharing this fascinating story about your father and about the unusual variety of apple! I always thought that "yellow jackets" are a variety of "wasps" so I would object to calling them "bees" which can do damage but are more helpful to humankind. Glad that they all survived. Your Mom seems to have a sense of humor.

Thank you and thanks for the suggestion. You're right, yellow jackets are a lot meaner than plain old bees. I will edit and correct that error.

A great story filled with nostalgia and a fact finding lesson on a variety of apple, I didn't know existed.
Great backstory about your father and his run in with the bees.
Enjoyable read.

Thank you. I didn't know this apple existed either until I was looking up apples for the contest. You can't believe how many weird ones there are.

Thank you. You should look up apples and see how many weird names there are. I didn't know about them and I was raised on a fruit farm. I don't think any of my family was allergic to bees. I stepped in a wasp nest while picking berries when I was a child; it's not a fun thing.

Hi there,

I enjoyed this short well-written piece. You did a good job relating the story and fitting the requirements of the competition. I bet that was incredibly painful too.

All the best
G

Thank you. It probably was painful, but I wasn't even born yet at that time. I did step in a wasp nest while picking berries once. Man, it hurt. I took my pants off out in the middle of the woods. LOL

Hello author what a well written true story about your dad got his name (Bloody Ploughman) --
then your authors notes about the variety of apples also with the name
Bloody Ploughman

Best to you in this contest

Gert

Thank you. Yep, Dad was lucky he didn't get hurt worse than he did. Panicky horses are not something one wants to deal with too often.

What a valuable source of information you are, my friend. I'm imagining that rather unfortunate experience of your dad and horses encountering the bees and bolting through a barbed wire fence, ugh! And the notes were exceptional too! Excellent entry in this contest, well done, good luck, blessings, Roy

Thank you. You can't imagine how many unusual names there are for apples out there. I was raised on a fruit farm, but I had no idea until I looked them up.

Oh my gosh, what a horrific event. We have killer bees that sometimes appear in our state. A few years back a woman was driving with her window open along a stretch where landscapers were cutting back frost bitten trees and upset a nest.

In a freak instant, they entered her passing car and stung both the driver and her dog repeatedly. The little dog didn't make it and she was hospitalized.

I'm glad your dad and his horses survived the yellow jackets. They are fierce warriors.

Thank you. Dad wore the nickname for the rest of his life. I can just imagine how hard those horses were to control.
