Another contest win - you're on a roll!

This is a lovely piece of reminiscing as you recall not only the retro items from Grandma's house, but also the things you liked to do there. There is a touch of sadness in the final line, suggesting that perhaps Grandma has passed away and her belongings are being sold off...

I may have misinterpreted that, since I notice that you (the voice of the poem) re now a grandparent yourself.

Steve

Thank you again for your insightful review. Both mom and grandma have passed away. Did keep some mementos, but couldnt keep them all. But, we always have our memories.

June, this poem is just precious, triggering nostalgic memories for you and your readers. I like everything about this poem -- from the smoothly flowing free verse format, the line breaks, the imagery, and the most importantly, the touching sentiments.

Unfortunately, I did not see my grandmother as often because she lived in another state. During the summers, we will visit her. Just as your poem describes, we looked forward to her treasures -- they were a representation of her and my mother's past (so to speak).

I like that you mentioned the garage sale. It was a garage sale that inspired me to write my poem, titled "The Garage Sale." The poem is in my portfolio if you wish to read it.

I went to a garage sale, and asked the seller why was she selling such beautiful and antique items so inexpensively, and she told me that the items reminded of her mother, and the memories were too painful. She was selling the pain away. Subsequently, I thought that people attending garage sales see the bargains, but usually have no idea that sometimes there are back stories behind the garage sales.

Thank you so much for this poem, June. It will resonate with me.

Thank you for your insights and kind comments. We are the sum total of our experiences in life, the good and the bad. And items can bring up either sweet or sad memories. Hopefully the good outweighs the bad! thank you again for reading.

Well written trinet. Nice flow. I enjoyed reading about these bits and pieces (Perfect title). I especially liked 'Retro fifties/Penny candy/Bottled coke. It brought me on a trip down memory lane. Your last stanza ... so true! Great work. Best wishes in the contest! :)
