Superb writing! A beautiful story of a tragic situation; my condolences. I tried to play the video and for whatever reason does not want to play. I liked the title of no second chances. Unfortunately, unlike the movies you don't always get that second chance. Twelve years ago my brother died of colon cancer. I had not seen him for almost a year when he called me to tell me he had two months to live. I was shocked! We were very close barely a year apart. I got him out of the hospital to stay with us for a month before he went to hospice. As sad as it was, I cherished every moment. We talked into the wee hours of the night and even got into a fight which made everything feel so normal (he got mad at me because I had his friend come get his car when he got so thin and weak. Also, he would not take his pain meds so he could drive. I was worried for him and other people on the road)!

Yes, what stunned me about the fire is that often there were no second chances. Sometimes there are. One couple left the party at 11:15 to get beer at a convenience store. When they returned ten minutes later, the warehouse was up in flames and their friends were trapped inside. The survivors muse that if they had not left the party at that precise moment, they would have died in the fire with their friends.

My father also died of colon cancer. Even before I knew his diagnoses, in the last years of his life I visited him every chance I got because I knew we would not have second chances. I built up a reservoir of memories and stories that helped sustain me after he passed. We must cherish every one and every moment now. Tomorrow is not promised to us.

Thank you for your generous, six star review.

I hope this link work this time. You may not have the right program to read it.

Very good true story. Wish I knew who you are. You work with the handicapped, I suppose. That doesn't help, though. Hope I remember to check later. :)

I have a fear of fire, and would never go to a place I couldn't get out of in seconds. There are too many places like this Ghost Ship. You have written this story so well, and I'm sure you will tell it to your audience in style too. I just cannot understand why people would take a chance and go to a place that is so dangerous. Marilyn was very sensible. Excellent story telling, good luck in the contest. :) Sandra xx

Thank you, Sandra, for your review. Several months before the fire, a homeless man was offered a place to stay in the Ghost Ship. He took one look at it and deemed it so unsafe that he declined to move in, stating that sleeping outside was safer. He had common sense. Thank you for wishing me success in the contest and in my performance.

What a terrible tragedy. How can the fire dept. miss a warehouse? Sounds like the city is in for some hefty lawsuits over that. I am so glad you and Mona are safe and sound. It must be very moving to hear you tell the story. Well written, my friend~Debbie

Yes, Debbie, the firehouse was a block and a half a way around the corner. Someone fled the burning building and ran to the fire station instead of call. Yes, the lawsuits have started. Thank you for your review and for wishing me success in my performance.

Beautiful story that came from ashes...it's amazing how such things can fuel our muse and give us stories to share. It's horrible the loss that occurred in that fire, but you have the opportunity to keep them alive by telling this...thanks!

Wow! What an amazing piece! I would have loved to have heard the actual storytelling live. Do not shy away from directing a story to a live audience. Whether being read or spoken it still conveys a great message and delivery.

The story is well written, and tragic. If the building had been inspected and repaired and rendered safe, would it have been available to those who came and enjoyed the society there, and the art, or just another apartment complex? It sounds like a fine netry for a personal memoir contest.

No, LIJ Red, if the building had been inspected and rendered safe, it would have been too expensive for artists. Right now, artists are being evicted throughout the Bay Area from marginal spaces. The rents are so high here, that art organizations are closing often for good because there is no cheap place to move to in the region. Thank you for your review and for wishing me success in the personal memoir contest.

It's tragic that so many had to die in an event that could have been prevented if the place had been properly inspected and brought up to code. Especially the sprinklers and several exits.
Your tribute via this story could be taped or put on a CD and left at the memorial. That way you'd contribute to the mourning process as I know you empathise a great deal with those who remain and grieve for those who passed.

Thank you for sharing your touching presentation.

Best wishes,
:) ellen

Yes, Ellen, I like your CD idea. I actually performed my "Ghost Ship" poem in the street in front of the burnt out building, but cut the scene out of my story which I have to perform within ten minutes. After the contest, I may reinstall the scene in a longer version of the story that includes my photos of the building and memorial and the KNBC interview with me.

Thank you for generous, six star review and for wishing me success in the contest.

Wow, what an amazing story! I could feel through the words of your story. It was real, and raw. I'm glad you were able to get your whole story out this time. Too bad they didn't have your whole review on the news. It's better to hear from actual artists than the reporters.
Glad your friend, Mona, got to be a part of it as well.

Good luck in the contest,
Rhonda

Thank you, Rhonda, for your generous, six star review. This "amazing story" is not my whole story yet. I had to cut five pages to get my story within my ten minute performance tomorrow night. After the contest, I will reinsert the missing scenes and post an extended version. Thank you for your review and for wishing me success in the contest.
