Since you are a highly rated author I feel hardly qualified to make a critique of your work. I must say that I find the plot intriguing and can't wait to learn more, particularly in respect of the mysterious Russians. It took me a little time to work out the roles of Philip, Jane, Drew and Helen? but no doubt these are explained in Chapter Ein. I have never heard the word "buffaloed" before but I assume this is an Americanism. Kind regards John

The Russians were allies in the war against the German Nazis, so that's how they obtained the artwork... spoils of war. They had no way of knowing who it really belonged to, so finder's keepers.
Very good chapter. So... how do they FIND it? I guess that's what the book is about. LOL!

Good imagery here - 'Jane's hands were on her hips. "I'll bring her to the patio and have Helen bring out a pitcher of lemonade and some fresh fruit."

Anderson is a suspicious guy and a bit harsh with Shana. I believe her and I hope he will eventually believe she has no idea why the Russians are following her. The suspense is building along with my curiosity. This is another fascinating chapter and I look forward to the next post.

Anderson might be used to getting his way, but this is still blunt and forceful. It sounds as if he is detaining her. I'd like to see Shana react to that, rather than meekly accept it.
During that visit, I saw a painting, 'Litzberg am Attersee' by Gustav Klimt. He did the painting in 1914. Have you heard of him?"
"Yes, he was an Austrian artist who used ornamental gold leaf as a flat two-dimensional perspective reminiscent of Byzantine mosaics."
"You're correct. -- This all sounds a bit stilted. Anderson's response sounds like it came straight from an encyclopedia or textbook. I was a little surprised by Anderson's knowledge, and expected Shana to be as well, but instead she just says "You're correct", like an teacher to a student. Perhaps Shana would speak very precisely and correctly at all times, being an English teacher and all, but would Anderson and his staff? Work on loosening up your dialogue a little, so it sounds more natural.
Other than those minor issues, it is great!

but is being Jewish really relevant here? (I think so because Jane is the first to acknowledge that Shana is Jewish and it's an important element to the story.
It sounds as if he is detaining her. I'd like to see Shana react to that, rather than meekly accept it. (I wanted to show Anderson as a man who ALWAYS gets his way and Shana as meek. Things will turn around during the story.)
I was a little surprised by Anderson's knowledge, and expected Shana to be as well, but instead she just says "You're correct", like an teacher to a student. (Later you will find out why and how Anderson has this knowledge.)
