Awww, I loved your last paragraph. If I had someone here to feed and water my dog, I'd leave in a heartbeat. I do love my dog.

I felt physically ill when Trump made as part of his victory speech after Hilary's concession, the comment that she did an excellent job as Secretary of State, even punctuating it with, "I mean that!" This coming from the one who promised his constituents that he would hire a bevy of attorneys after the election to bring her to trial for her crimes against America. Aw, well, since I have to live anyway, I might as well live through this administration. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed your account of the pre and post elections.

Only one teensy nit:

Hillary Clinton was judged against a standard that Trump has never came close to approaching. [... that Trump has never COME close to approaching.]

I have something very important to tell you about Canada--dogs are welcome. Thanks for entertaining my political exit--stage right. Thanks.

Thank you so much for posting this superb essay and awesome entry for the Non-Fiction contest. I am impressed with your knowledge of US politics and love how you incorporated your trip into the story. I agree with everything you said except I feel you have every right to your opinion. You do not have to be an American to have one. America, sadly, has an effect on the world and doesn't mind having an opinion about every other country. We need to listen more to other countries, but now that we have Trump, I doubt he really cares what any one (or country) thinks. Excellent work with this and I wish you all the best in the contest.

You and I are bookends, the geographic Oreo cookie. Of course I'm entitled to my opinion, but most people are looking for like-minded folks to agree with them. I really don't give a shit, about the contest or any negative fall-out. The days of my panning for approval on this site or in my world are gone. I do believe in courtesy, and I am deeply sensitive what might happen in the US. Short of letting and supporting AWOL American immigration into Canada--I really am going to make a huge effort to shut up and go away. Thanks for the stars.

Hi Ingrid,

While I stand in complete disagreement with your views on Hillary, as you well know, your article is well written and I appreciate you sharing your experience as you visited during election week. You also know that I'm not a fan of Obama, so you won't be surprised that I don't disapprove of a counter on his executive orders or Obamacare. If you delve deeper, it really wasn't the best thing for America as a whole, and I personally know many who lost their health care coverage due to those mandates, and will be charged a penalty because now they cannot afford any at all.

While many Americans find the man abrasive or less than diplomatic (there has been enough negativity, I'm being nice here) what they wanted was a better choice for their families. Many will tell you that the policies of the Obama administration have not improved their situation over the past eight years, and Hillary wasn't promising anything different. I can tell you, from the standpoint of working for a large retailer, that the answer to the squeeze from the government was to reduce the hours worked by they associates and raise the qualification of hours stipulation for receiving insurance. Not to mention that the cost of said insurance is skyrocketing and the coverage of the policies is being diminished. This issue alone was a deal breaker for many American families, which is why you saw red spreading across the map in all but the most highly populated areas.

Add to that the fact that anyone else in her position would have been jailed by the investigation into Clinton's handling of classified information and my choice was clear, in that my conscience wasn't going to let me cast a vote for her (even if I'd been inclined to in the first place.) That was a deal breaker. How exactly can someone think it is ok to send classified documents to a daughter with no security clearance and feel like there should be no consequences? You stated that she is an intelligent woman, and I've no doubt that she is, however, I also believe her to be cunning, calculating, and willing to do anything to make herself come out on top, regardless of the safety of the American people. Not to mention that she is funded by the Mid-East conglomerate, that at best, would be willing to maim or kill half of her supporters without even blinking an eye. (Sorry, didn't mean to go into a rant there.)

You may be equally surprised to discover that I didn't vote for Trump. (Check out my latest piece if you want to know who I voted for.) I believe that he got the more conservative vote based on his platform, not his antics. While you may not feel that America is as progressive as Canada, and that it was finally catching up to you, ten years after the fact, the fact of the matter is that it isn't what half of the country wanted.

I, myself, am more of a centerist, with conservative leanings, if you will. I feel like everyone is entitled to their rights, but in doing so, those rights need not infringe on the rights of others. I'll use the gay marriage as an example; to me, that battle is all about a piece of paper. The difference between a gay man and a straight man pertains to what he does in the privacy of his own bedroom. (Yes, I'm simplifying, only to easily make my point. Clearly, gay men tend to be better dressers lol) I really don't care what people do in the privacy of their own homes, or within their self declared circle of friends, as long as it isn't infringing on me and my family. I absolutely do not see the need for laws and courts to wipe out a Christian man's business because he doesn't want to bake a cake for a gay wedding. It goes against the core of his belief system and there are numerous other bakeries in this country that would bake the cake with no issue. If we are truly trying to breed tolerance here, then take the path with least resistance. I, myself, wouldn't want to entrust something as important as my wedding cake to someone who is unwilling to bake it, anyways. There are too many factors that could go wrong in the best of situations, let alone forcing someone to do something against their will.

By the way, if you delve back into the reign of the Clinton family, you'll find that their positions have flipped on the issue of immigration and that they haven't always openly embraced the LGBT community. At best, when she thinks she isn't on camera, Hillary Clinton talks worse than a truck driver, and is disdainful of those who she views as 'beneath' her or in servitude to her. Her military detachments and secret service detail don't call her jet, "Broomstick One," for no good reason. There are many published first hand accounts of how she has treated people during her time in Washington. I'm not saying she should be a cream puff, we know that women need to stand strong in what is perceived as a man's world, however, that doesn't mean it is acceptable to treat people with disrespect. No, I could never condone her behaviors with my vote.

Therein lied my dilemma, as I took this quiz and agreed 89% with Trump's platform, but certainly not with his delivery. Therefore, I cast my vote for a more conservative independent candidate, because I want to be able to sleep at night and have a clear conscience. My husband thought I'd be throwing my vote away, and it is probably the first Presidential election where we didn't vote for the same candidate. (Although he was dreading, he thought that Hillary would come out the winner, and so he did vote for Trump, as a counter measure to all I've written above, just to not "waste" his vote. He thought my vote would actually aid Clinton, but as it turns out, the spoilers went the other way. And, honestly, votes in Alaska have never really swayed an election, although, I guess they could have come close in tipping the scales in this one. Closer than I'd ever imagined.)

Thank you for writing this candid account of your experience. I hope you have safe travels home on Sunday and enjoy the rest of your trip.

Notes:
Or, am I mistake? (mistaken)

We've arrived at our final destination, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The weather is fantastic, a temperate 70 degrees--21 degrees Celsius, for my Canadian buddies. Even the ocean is warm enough to walk in the surf, though the shark's teeth left behind on the beach by the outgoing tide would dissuade me regardless of air temperature. Long-range forecasts promise a week of sunshine. (I really enjoyed the descriptive elements in this passage; ie, shark's teeth.)

(I'm confused by this passage about the e-mail server and the reference to the offense being twenty years old. The e-mail scandal stems from when she was Secretary of State, that wasn't twenty years ago.) Back in the day, and this offense is at least twenty years old, no one knew about hacking. She didn't contrive or conspire to put America at risk. The bottom line, she screwed up--NOTHING HAPPENED.
On the other hand, Coney's unprecedented announcement (Comey, twice in this paragraph.)

Good luck in the contest!

My reaction to your review is one of appreciation for taking the time to explain your POV and support for your vote. Every difference of opinion should not create a debate. I really don't want to be right--especially not about my fears for the future. When it comes to Trump election promises, I hope 70% are right, and the 30% that have to do with hate-mongering are erased by his advisors. Best of luck, Kim and thanks for taking the time to comment.

Love the play on the word odyssey, Ingrid. There is something very fishy about the election, but I like you, am disengaging after a few more posts. When President Giuliana and his puppet Donald Trump decide to renegotiate NAFTA and it effects my life even more than the election has I'll be back.

Great inclusion of the Timmy's double-double. I always enjoy those myself whilst on the road again.

That is the one thing the Trump/Giuliani won't have to face, is the continual opposition to everything from congress. I think the US should introduce a viable third-party to offset the deadlocks.

I believe you hit the proverbial nail on the head. There was a great deal of female envy toward Hillary, and there I think specifically of Oprah Winfrey. I can't imagine Oprah wanting any woman in the world to be more powerful than her and especially not a white woman from a poor working class background. Maybe Trump will co opt Oprah to run Trump TV to help her own sagging TV network.

I am not anti-American or anti-republican, I am anti Trump, like you. It's more than passing strange that the least qualified person in the land will soon be the Commander in Chief.

I also agree that almost every Trump promise will be retracted. How telling is that he has already removed his statement about deporting Muslims from his web site. He wanted to win and he would and did whatever it took to achieve his own ends.

Anyway welcome back to Canada, your home and native land.

Great job with this essay and I wish you the best luck in the contest.

I'm enjoying myself, but I am very conscious that I am a guest. Sometimes we need to leave our comfort zone to realize what we have.at home.

I'm not aware of any stand Oprah ,made about the candidates or election. Did she come out in favour of Trump? I actually find it hard to believe she would be anything but supportive of Hillary and women. When you have her kind of money, it's hardly a competition.

Thanks for the review and the visit.

No, Oprah came out very unenthusiastically supposedly in support of Hillary. My guess is the envy at that level is far more intense than that found among plebes like me. LOL.

The people have spoken. Trump is our President. We Americans were tired of the "change" Obama brought us, and there was more to come from Hilary. When they went to the White House, the joke in Arkansas was that we voted him in to get him out of our state. There is a lot about the Clintons you don't know.

I think one thing that did her in was her support for partial-birth abortions. That is too horrible to think about.

I'm always afraid I'll offend someone, and I surely don't want to do that with you, but I think Trump will surprise everyone - in a good way. I've been saying for years that we need someone that is not a professional politician.

Thanks for allowing me my say, and I hope we are still friends. 8-)

Of course we're friends, and I suspect we could have a very real conversation that wasn't riddled with clichés and bombastic slogans. But please don't assume what I know and don't know. I've invested many years staying apprised of issues and personalities.

I too object to partial birth policies, but the conditions applicable to such a drastic measure are almost always centred on saving a woman's life. On the other hand, I find it incredibly offensive to have a supreme court judge determine a woman's first term abortion. To imagine a woman should be punished and prosecuted for this decision is beyond my sense of sensibilities. What a crappy decision to have to make, and than God I've never been in the situation.

    Thanks for reading and sharing.

I'm so glad we're still friends. I must tell you, though, that all the research will not show was a vindictive, vicious person Hilary Clinton is. I've known people who worked with here, and I have some in the capacity of my employer's secretary. Everyone was frightened to death of her because she would "go after" you in a big way.

But let's not talk politics anymore. I don't get angry, but so many people do. I've said very little here or anywhere during all this campaigning period. The two camps are sharply divided. We'll just have to wait and see how things turn out. 8-)

This is a fine entry in the non-fiction writing contest. In your creative tour-of-America analysis I could say many things as my emotions are raw after the elections and fearful over what might become, but I can focus on one thing. Before I read your essay, I thought about your autobiography in which you describe office and corporate women putting other women down. You had even written that they can be even more vicious than men. I thought of this when the election returns show that Trump received 42% of the women vote, and that women vilified another woman. With all the lies Trump told, I am saddened that the Crooked Hillary epithet stuck to Clinton. Many voters used her gender against her. This is sad, but I remember that your autobiography warned me that this happens. Now it is on the world stage.

Thank you for sharing your sobering words and analysis. I wish you success, Ingrid, in the contest.

I looked at Hillary's face as she stood proud on the podium. She gave it her best, despite her flaws. Yes, your memory serves you well. I knew if she cried, a lot of women would forgive her and men would feel protective. Her strength in standing up against all the arrows was not admired, and yet that is the strength the world needs when dealing with International affairs. No matter she lost, the winner is sure to continue to stumble.

I wish America well. I'm going to try very hard to put in blinders. Thanks, Andre

Excellent commentary, and should be quite a contender in the non-fiction writing contest. Such a great account of your venture into the U.S. at election time. It still boggles my mind that Trump succeeded. I just hope he won't disgrace the country too badly before the world. I doubt that he'll be able to fulfill his promises, so that makes me wonder how long he will keep his supporters. Hillary Clinton certainly had the experience and knowledge going for her, but her ethical problems began while she was still in the governor's residence and before Bill became president. I doubt that it was the emails alone that hurt her, but the countless ethical problems that she hasn't been held accountable for. At least she had "sane" going for her, which is more than can be said of Trump. He's been on his good behavior for a few weeks, but that's not his nature. It won't last. I don't know why so many voters couldn't see the problems that a Trump presidency will bring. Great writing, and lovely description of your trip to the U.S. judi

Excellent. I enjoyed this outsider's review of our country and the election. I think the outcome was a total surprise to everyone. I woke up on the 9th and turned the television on the see how bad Trump got beat; imagine my shock and surprise. All we can do now is take things one day at a time or come and live with you. Do you have room for my 12 cats and one dog? LOL

Don't let historical respect for the office of the presidency cloud your vigilance and voice in watching the government take form. There is no room for relaxed apathy in this regime. Thanks for the comments and review.

I had to smile Ingrid. (The Stock Market recovered nicely.) There was a lot of unhappiness when Obama took over. We survived.
America has spoken. Let's give the man a chance. He is a smart man and he loves our country and will help us pay our debts and rebuild the crumbling cities, highways, and bridges, and he is a builder. He will put Americans back to work not sitting on their touches drawing government money for doing nothing.
We were headed in the wrong direction and a change was necessary. I am optimistic and feel positive about the future of our country. We have lost faith in what the media reports anymore. They are making money while they can. The media is more corrupt than the politicians. LOL . God Bless America and Canada our good neighbors.X Nancy

Nancy, I seriously hope your optimism proves worthy of your expectations. I'd like nothing more than to come on this site and apologize or at least admit I was wrong. But, hey, my father was a builder and he screwed his daughters and beat his wife. I'm neither impressed by Trump's resume nor his performance in making a profit by raking his suppliers and subcontractors over the coals. I seriously wish you well. ingrid

Hi Ingrid,

An excellent piece here. (sorry no sixes left unusually this week!) A wonderfully personal look at the election from a detached view. Very well put together.

no matter that Americans might believe its their country to govern - it's.

blocking CNN, and look forward to drinking a decent beer. - looking.

There may be a shortage of flagpoles in our country entirely due to US consumption - great line raising a firm smile.

In the morning, I turn on the TV. Holy shit! - okay, now admittedly this bothers me not and is very mild but you may want to consider a mild language warning at the top. you know how sensitive some people can get! lol

but I suspect in the years to come, Russia may be become America's new best friend. - I think this section needs abit of attention, it doesn't scan well. Perhaps delete the 'be'.

All the best
